1 dead, 2 injured in explosion near CA Marine base

COLEVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A propane gas explosion damaged several residences in a housing unit for a U.S. Marine Corps training base in northern California, killing one person and injuring two others, an official said Saturday.

The blast around 9 p.m. PST Friday in Coleville damaged seven residences, forcing the temporary evacuation of 38 families, Marine spokesman Capt. Nicholas Mannweiler said.

The privatized military housing area in Colville is about 30 miles from the U.S. Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center near Bridgeport, where the Marines train for mountain operations.

Mannweiler, the public affairs director for the base, said the two injured were rushed to area hospitals suffering from serious burns and shock. He did not have further details. Some others had superficial cuts and bruises.

He said "two separate families were impacted" by the blast, but he did not disclose any other information on the identities of the casualties. Officials had said earlier up to five people had been injured.

"A propane gas leak ignited due to unknown causes," Mannweiler said. He said it was related to the military housing area's propane distribution system, and was not associated with activities at the Marine base. The blast is under investigation.

The families were evacuated mainly due to a lack of utilities and bad weather, Mannweiler said. They are staying with friends or at other homes in the off-base unit, made up of duplexes and stand-alone residences.

The base fire department and Antelope Valley volunteer fire department put out the fire caused by the blast.

Located in the Sierra Nevada mountains near the Nevada border, the Mountain Warfare Training Center is one of the Marine's most remote posts. The base conducts unit and individual training for action in mountainous, high altitude, and cold weather areas.

So sorry for those affected. I was there in 1988 for cold weather training, but I couldn't imagine being stationed there in a support or training billet. But I wish I had kept the Mickey Mouse boots that I was issued for that deployment.

Condolences to the families dealing with their loss and injuries. I've been flyfishing this area in the sierras for over 15 years and the locals are wonderful to interact with. But I never heard a word about the Marine Training facilities.

Sure are a lot of military hating liberals on line this morning. People died, show some class and show respect

Because it's the morning. In general, on Yahoo, trolls with left-leaning tendencies generally seem to make up the majority of morning posts. Late afternoon/early evening -- trolls that tend to make right-leaning posts. Late night? A lot of the Chinese shills and Middle Eastern trolls. It's kind of fun once you start seeing the pattern.

Privatized military housing? I had not realized that the military was handing out real estate opportunities in the U.S. to private companies.Be nice if they mentioned who the company was. Sounds like they goofed up, whoever they are.

I was stationed there in the mid 90s and lived with my family in that housing. It's a beautiful place; the best kept secret in the Marine Corps. My prayers to the families.

My condolences to the family of the deceased and prayers for those injured. Now for all those with negative comments. This was a propane gas explosion caused by a leak. Not the first time something like this happened nor is it likely to be the last. Propane is heavier than air and leaking gas mixes with air as it collects in low spots until it hits the correct mixture to ignite. At that point all it needs is an ignition source. A spark from a furnace motor, a pilot light in a hot water tank, a cigarette butt, any sort of spark or open flame will set it off. As far as what triggered it I would suggest leaving that to the fire investigators to determine the cause. In most of these incidents it has been found that some sort of equipment failure was the cause. If this had happened in a civilian trailer park or other community that relies on propane for heat the comments would run heavy with terms like " trailer trash " instead because it happened in a military community the naysayers just want to bash the armed forces. These folks fight and die for your right to run your mouth without fear of reprisial. Is it too much to ask that you show them a little respect?

Bridgeport has been there for a while. How long? Put it this way, I had to catch a hop on an old C-117D (that's a DC 3 for you civilian pikes) from Pendleton up to Fallon Naval Air Station and from there, board a Sea Knight and wheeze our way up to Pickle Meadows.

Yeah, it's been there a while.

As a former Marine Officer, my heart goes out to all those affected. Deaths are a casualty of war, but not at home with their loved ones.
    • Mark  •  3 mths ago
No laughter here and no politics please. People have died a needless death. Propane is dangerous stuff. Any distribution system, even a single tank to a single house needs to be monitored and tested. Plus installation is critical. There should always be downhill ventilation, even propane tanks installed outside need to be able to shed any leaked propane as it will pool at the bottom of any enclosure.. It is a tragedy that anyone died in this situation. I have two tanks in a boat both in lockers with immediate drainage to the outside at the bottom of the locker. Anybody using any gas in an enclosed area, boat, home or RV, natural gas or propane, needs to check their system regularly. Natural gas is only safer if it can dissipate to the outside. In an enclosed RV, boat or home, the results can be similar to that of propane leak.
