RACINE, Wis. (AP) — One person died and two others were injured in separate weekend skydiving accidents in southern Wisconsin.
Racine County sheriff's officials said a Racine man died Sunday afternoon at Sylvania Airport in Sturtevant.
Sheriff's Lt. Steve Sikora said preliminary investigations indicate the victim's parachute became entangled with another skydiver's canopy. Fredrick Platt Jr., 44, died at the scene, sheriff's officials said. The other skydiver, Neil Kulman, 27, sustained minor injuries after landing in some trees.
Both of the men were skydiving through Skydive Midwest, located next to the airport, about 30 miles south of Milwaukee.
Sikora said the investigation is ongoing.
In another incident, a female skydiver was injured Sunday when she landed in a cornfield about a mile from her intended landing area at the Fort Atkinson Municipal Airport in Jefferson County. She was taken by air to University Hospital in Madison.
Jefferson Fire Chief Ron Wegner said the woman was an experienced skydiver in her mid-30s. He told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel it appeared she came up short of the airport where she intended to land and there was no indication anything was wrong with her parachute. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution but appeared to be OK.
She was alert and talking and joking with rescuers when they arrived, Wegner said.
