10 congressmen sue Obama over strikes in Libya

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bipartisan group of 10 lawmakers is suing President Barack Obama for taking military action against Libya without war authorization from Congress.

The lawmakers say Obama violated the Constitution in bypassing Congress and using international organizations like the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to authorize military force.

The lawmakers want a judge to issue an order suspending military operations without congressional approval. They said they were filing their lawsuit Wednesday against Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

The plaintiffs are Democratic Reps. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, John Conyers of Michigan and Michael Capuano of Massachusetts and Republican Reps. Walter Jones and Howard Coble of North Carolina, Tim Johnson of Illinois, Dan Burton of Indiana, Jimmy Duncan of Tennessee, Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland and Ron Paul of Texas.

How about if WE YHE PEOPLE give Congress 90 days to find that missing 6 Billion Dollars!!!
      • Judi 11 mths ago
That 6 billion was never lost. It was used by some agency to pay for whatever in the wars.

Why not investigate the $3 trillion Dov Zakheim managed to pilfer out of the Pentagon? But that may be a problem since one of the 9/11 planes crashed into the accounting department and destroyed all the evidence and killed the people that could put a finger on what he has done with the taxpayer's money!

Where is the 6 BILLION, yes BILLION, that Republican Bush gave to Iraq? Let's sue the Republicans in congress for that!!! Why follow the chump change for something good for the Arab people?

Because Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Business & Big Insurance own our Congress. ...and THEY want to see Republicans in the building. So... You & I wallow in no Recovery, until supposedly the GOP gets control of things.

(Note: D'you think we'll actually SEE a Recovery AFTER the GOP were to take control?? I'd say, not like what we ever HAD before. The 'Recovery' would actually look more like turning us into Argentina--a miniscule, cheerful, unapologetic Upper Class, indifferent of the enormous Middle Class relegated to becoming the Working Poor, under the thumb of a Fascist Regime.)

One day the American people will wake up...I hope. While we are busy attacking each other along party lines and political affiliation, our country continues to erode. It didn't start with President Obama and it's not going to end with him. Instead of jumping on any fools bandwagon, try holding ALL politicians to a higher standard. Lots of talk about what President Obama is doing wrong and so forth but not much in the way of a sound plan for turning things around. Unemployment, health care, social security, the defense budget, medicare, education, housing, energy costs, and last but not least our food supply. Those are the issues that affect each of us on a daily basis. So in my humble opinion, if a person doesn't have a sound plan to address these issues, I'm not interested in anything they have to say. Politicians talking about health care but they aren't talking about reducing, cutting, eliminating, or going to some voucher program for themselves. They'd rather keep their lifetime top of the line health plan. Politicians talking about waste but they aren't willing to eliminate their "giveaways" to their contributors. American is strong when we stand together for the common good. We are weak, vulnerable and an easy target when we are distracted with all this silly rhetoric fueled by self-serving individuals, politicians, and organizations.

the bickering has been going on since day one - it may very well be the reason we are so strong

Ideological differences have been present from day one. This bickering/accusing the other side of wanting to destroy its own country, that's far more recent, and it does nothing to strengthen this country.

As President, you have 90 days after engaging the enemy to put your case before Congress. Then congress gets to vote to authorize funding for the engagement. If the engagement is seen as unconstitutional Congress can unfund it and we must with-draw.

Well, at least it's nice to know this is a bipartisan effort!

Bush received the consent of Congress to pursue his vendetta against Saddam alongside the War on Terror. Anyone with an Internet connection can look up "H.J.Res. 114; Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002".

Before blasting Bush, look up your facts. If you want to attack someone, get your facts straight. Obama did not receive the authorization of Congress in any constitutional format. Not a declaration of war, not a joint resolution, not a bill or law, heck, not even a concurrent resolution just stating the opinion of Congress!

Just as leftists criticize rightists from not doing their research before going after things, so too must they heed their own words. Bush got the consent of Congress. It wasn't a declaration of war (it should have been), but it was a joint resolution and signed by most everyone there, and yes, Nancy and Reid signed it.

When Bush wanted to go to war, Biden warned him that if he did not get a Congressional approval that he (Biden) would start impeachment proceedings. Bush DID get congressional approval for both wars in which Pelosi and Reid signed on the dotted line. However, I did not hear anything from Biden when Obama started bombing Libya without any approval from anyone.

Saddam killed tens of thousands of his own people with Mustard Gas, which is considered WMD, and the left had a field day, however their Messiah invades Libya because Gadhaffi kills a couple hundred people and Obama is hailed as a humanitarian.
    • GG  •  11 mths ago
Again, this president is trying to circumvent the law on a technicality. He thought be saying we are in a support role with NATO, he doesn't need the consent of Congress. Who does he think he is kidding? We are in command, we are paying for the war, so he needs Congressional approval.
    • Mick  •  11 mths ago
Bush DID have Congressional Approval !!!
    • DanC  •  11 mths ago
      He BROKE the law.
    • Edwin  •  11 mths ago
This is one of those stories where liberal ignorance really gets a chance to shine.

BUSH got Congressional approval. OBAMA did not.

There. That's only SIX WORDS. Do you need me to type them more slowly???

It is good to know we have some senators that have backbone, are not bought and look to the Constitution.
