101-year-old Detroit woman evicted in foreclosure

DETROIT (AP) — A 101-year-old woman was evicted from the southwest Detroit home where she lived for nearly six decades after her 65-year-old son failed to pay the mortgage.

Texana Hollis was evicted Monday and her belongings were placed outside the home. Her son, Warren Hollis, said he didn't pay the bill for several years and disregarded eviction notices.

"I kept it from her because I didn't want to worry her," Warren Hollis told WXYZ-TV for a report that aired Monday night. "I was just so sure it wasn't going to happen."

Wayne County Chief Deputy Treasurer David Szymanski told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Hollises took out an adjustable-rate mortgage in 2002. A default and foreclosure notice was filed in November.

"They ended up owing $80,000 on the home," Szymanski said. "Warren indicates he did not make the payments. He got the notices, but threw them away."

County records show that property taxes were paid on the home through summer 2010. A winter tax bill of $55.95, including interest and fees, was unpaid, and a $778.44 summer tax bill was due this month.

A neighbor was letting Texana and Warren Hollis live in a rental house across the street from the home they shared, and Texana Hollis' belongings were being moved there. Others, including a nonprofit organization, were working to get her back into her home.

On Monday night, she was taken to a hospital for evaluation after she became disoriented.

Szymanski said county officials were asking questions and looking into what they can do to help. He said the county has worked with 10,000 taxpayers to keep them from going into foreclosure.

"The teachable moment here is for people not to stick their head in the sand," he said.

Don't stick her head in the sand, huh? What happens if the 101 year old woman wasn't mentally capable of monitoring her own finances? Anybody ever stop to think about that before they criticized the lady?

I'm pretty sure they're talking about the son as well all know he's an idiot.

lets see if I have this right. Son takes out a mortgage on his 92 yr.old moms' ,in 2002. He lives there with his mom, cashing her social security checks and whatever other funds she has. He also keeps all the money they get for the loan and spends it on whatever he wants. He may or may not have told mom of the loan (could have had Power of Attorney and not needed her signature). Then decides not to pay a dime for the loan. Probly hoping mom dies so he can pay for loan with her life insurance. The son is abusive, irrisponsible, neglectful ad should be investigated. If mom gets the house back he should be somewhere else.

The son should be brought up on chargers that the mother isn't required to file because you know she never will. This is where the powers/govt that be can intervene on behalf of a citizen in a good way.

I'm glad someone else saw that.... The son is the bad person in this situation. Talking his mother into borrowing money against her home, that is already paid off, so he can pay bills and squander $33K. Then to add insult to injury, he ignores and hides all the legal notices regarding the eviction. The stress will probably kill his mother, which can all be attributed back to the son.

The son is to blame not the bank. Ignoring the problem wont make it go away. Do something about it. Taxpayers should not have to pay for his behavior. He took advantage of mon not the bank in this instance.

The son IS to blame. But the mom is old and poor and we 'advertise' ourselves as a nation who cares about people. The bank could no doubt work something out that would not affect your wallet. Even if that is not the case, maybe we could add a few dollars to the wealthiest peeps' tax bills to help a poor old woman.

thats exactly what I was thinking original poster!
      • WeToldYouSo! 8 mths ago
Christine, you are part of the problem! Why is it that those who work hard and make something of themselves are always targeted to contribute more and more for these useless mooches? There's a big difference between giving someone a hand-up and paying their way. This type of sympathy is what makes this country weak and BROKE. These people NEVER amount to anything and are like a tick - they hitch a free ride and suck the life out of you.

That's the way it works, when you borrow money you have to pay it back. I'm sure the lender was thrilled to get property in DETROIT anyway. Talk about a red hot real estate market.

We send money to other countries that hate us and a woman who is blessed to live a long life and probably full of rich stories of hardship and heritage that could enrich our lives with her knowledge...and she gets the boot...but the money that goes over seas could not stay here to keep her in her home the rest of her days...I guess she is disoriented...being shoved out of her familiar secure surroundings with all her things that are familiar to her....where is Oprah and Extreme Makeover ...who say they help people...let her live out her life with life time rights to her home...please who ever owns her home now....how many more years could she have left....God bless her....
      • em 7 mths ago
forget the son...let him live in the streets for what he did ...but let her live in her home til the end of her days...she probably paid enough interest in her lifetime to pay for that house three or four times ....and greed is the culprit...
    • Candy  •  7 mths ago
The guy says he didn't want her to worry. Well now that's she's homeless, what do you think she's doing now?!!
    • SallyP  •  8 mths ago
What happened to her Social Security etc?? Did the son spend it and not pay the house payment???
      • Jeanne 8 mths ago
At her age her SS check is probably quite small.
    • david  •  8 mths ago
Mind you, after sixty yrs im sure the bank has already collected the prinicple and then some on the house. She was prob only paying interest money back by now.
    • DeathzAngel2  •  8 mths ago
That mortgage could have been paid off twice in 60 years. Who was on the title? Did the son have POA? What did he do with the money? What was happening with her SSI? Someone really needs to look at the son, who is now getting "help" for being scandalous.
    • Concerned  •  8 mths ago
I wonder what would happen if everyone who ownes a home stops making a payment for 3 months? (and put it in savings) And then make there payments. Wonder how much money the banks would lose. Just a thought.
    • REALITY  •  8 mths ago
So, why did her son not pay the mortgage... seems like that was the arrangement from the onset. So we hear from another in the gimme crowd.
    • ALVIN  •  8 mths ago
Do anyone other then my self see whats wrong with this picture? what mortgage lender will allow a 92 year old woman to take out a 40 year loan as if she is going to be around in 40 years to pay it back, she is another victim of the housing market meltdown, they were willing to remortgage or refinance anyone who applied without the homeowner having so much as a penny increase in their personal income because they would bundle then up and sale them off as toxic assets, this lady is well beyond retirement age, probably living off social security and a pension with no other source of income and they expected her to pay her loan by age 132? I'm not saying her son is not to blame either, you should pay your debt, but i think they never expected her to pay them back which leads me to believe that she was set up for failure.
    • Marie  •  8 mths ago
This is why : You work hard in your youth and raise your offspring to do the same. Production. Own a home and retire. Success. This 2 step plan will avoid situations like this. And even if your offspring still turns out tobe an idiot, you will still be the owner of your assets. No forclosong on that. Hope this woman finds a way and the son grows up.

      Where my Obama $$?

When you don't pay the mortgage, for whatever reason in the world, no matter your age, race, ethnicity, religion, or any other factor.....YOU GET EVICTED!

101 years old or a shiny newborn....no pay the bill? YOUR GONE!

While I sympathize with the plight of the elderly, if those thinking it is so terrible that a bank would foreclose on a home for lack of payment want to make it better, let them open up their wallets and make the mortgage payments!

We are in a major economic adjustment and bad things happen to both the responsible and the irresponsible alike.

Blaming banks for foreclosure is like blaming spoons on obesity! Nobody forced them to use a mortgage to buy a home.

....and the wheels on the bus go round and round, but those who can't pay their rent/mortgage go without shelter. C'est La Vie!
