10th-grade student dies after medical emergency at Two Rivers High School pool

TWO RIVERS - A 10th-grade student died Tuesday after a medical emergency at Two Rivers High School.

In a message to parents, District Administrator Diane Johnson said student Zachary Benson suffered a serious medical emergency in the pool.

Two Rivers Fire Department Assistant Chief David Murack said paramedics responded around 1:50 p.m. and took Benson to a local hospital, where he died.

The school was closed Wednesday, but Johnson said counselors were available to help students, parents and school employees. She said if a child wished to be at school for support and needed transportation, a parent or the student could call the high school office at 920-793-2291 and a staff member would pick up the student and take them to the school.

Two Rivers police declined to provide more information Wednesday but said a news release was expected later in the day.

This story will be updated as more information is released.
