Nov. 11, 2011, isn't just Veteran's Day. This year, it marks a supposedly special moment that comes only once every 100 years when the month, day and year coincide will all ones in the digits. Even Jan. 11 can't compete because that day was technically "01/11/11."
Here's a look at how people across the world are celebrating 11/11/11.
Infinite Corridor
MIT's Infinite Corridor is expected to align with the sun on 11/11/11. The Boston Globe reports an 825-foot hallway is known to light up with the sun close to sunset twice a year. The occurrences happen in mid-November and in January. In 2011, MIT graduate students predicted the glow of the sun will light up the corridor dubbed MIThenge sometime around 4:20 p.m. ET. One MIT website suggests arriving at the hallway 15 minutes early as the exact time can be a little wayward.
Nerd New Year
Redwood City, Calif., will be celebrating Nerd New Year at 11:11 p.m. on Nov. 11. A block party will happen at 2600 Broadway Street. Donations of $11 are being requested for 11 local charities. With every donation of $11, you receive 11 raffle tickets for 111 prizes. Live music will be running all day with a countdown to 11:11:11 as Nerd New Year in Silicon Valley. The San Jose Mercury-News states the party starts at 3 p.m. adjacent to the Caltrain station.
Baby Births
Fox News reports one baby doctor in Des Moines, Iowa, is offering to refund his fee for delivering any baby on 11/11/11. Two women have Caesarian sections scheduled that day. Dr. Ross Valone stated around two births will likely happen naturally on that day anyway. His fee runs between $900 and $2,000, which he has offered to keep in a savings account for the newborns until they turn 21 years old.
Weddings and Birthdays
Many children will be celebrating their 11th birthdays Nov. 11. AP reports Wisconsin twins Betsy and Katie Overman will mark their special occasion with gifts and maybe shopping. The St. Petersburg Times lists Race and Brooke Belmont as twins celebrating their 11th birthday in South Tampa, Fla. They plan to go shopping for their birthday too.
The Orlando Sentinel states Walt Disney World will be celebrating 11 weddings Nov. 11. One such couple actually met working at the resort three years ago and will be getting married at 10 a.m. at Walt Disney World. Time Magazine reports thousands of couples are flocking to Las Vegas to get married on the magic date of 11/11/11. Normally the Clark County clerk's office receives around 1,000 pre-applications for marriage licenses a month. For Nov. 11, they have received over 3,500.
Deals
Tourist attractions and resorts are planning discount deals Nov. 11. The Los Angeles Times states the Skywalk glass bridge at the Grand Canyon will take $11 off their fee until close time Nov. 11. The Hualapai site on the west side of the Grand Canyon offers an all-day pass for $70 instead of their normal fee of $81.
Computer World reports the tech world is abuzz with the new Droid Razr phone that will be shipped Nov. 11. Verizon starts selling their new phone at 11:11 a.m. that morning. The Los Angeles Times also believes Nov. 11 is a good day for snow skiing. Big Bear Lake ski resort will discount its lift ticket from $56 to $11 one day only if you make a reservation to stay at the place sometime during the winter ski season.
