16-foot python found in Everglades had eaten deer

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, Fla. (AP) — Officials in the Florida Everglades have captured and killed a 16-foot-long Burmese python that had just eaten an adult deer.

Scott Hardin, exotic species coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, says workers found the snake on Thursday. The reptile was one of the largest ever found in South Florida.

Hardin says the python had recently consumed a 76-pound female deer that had died. He says it was an important capture to help stop the spread of pythons further north.

They found one Python not long ago in the Glades that had constricted around and killed an alligator... then choked to death trying to eat it... true story.

Just for general education - pythons are not native to Florida and therefore, have no natural predators - they are in Florida because of folks releasing their pets that have out grown their usefulness, etc. They need purged from Florida as soon as possible.

Stupid idiots who buy them who eventually release them when they get to big and get out of control. One family found out the hard way when their snake killed their baby in a crib. Florida has waited to long to enforce or make laws and these snakes have multiplied like rats. Also those that harvest them from other countries need stiffer fines and longer jail time for illegal importing of them.

My buddy had a 14-foot Burmese Python as a pet back in college. We used to let him out during parties at his house. That giant snake would just cruise all over the house, across people's lap on the couch, around the back of our heads and necks. In hindsight, that was probably pretty darn stupid.

I get the impression when I read this article that killing the 16ft burmese python has eliminated the threat of a large python in the swamp. They act like 16 ft is unique. I saw a special on television about the alien invasion of African and Burmese pythons in South Florida. Authorities were finding 20 ft snakes or longer. I wouldn't want to live in Miami Gardens or near the Ever Glades. Burmese pythons are not the only alien invading species in the swamps. There are king cobras, black mambas, African pythons, and dangerous lizards crawling around. Little Susie better watch her back in the back yard.

people responsible for these monsters being released into the wild should be imprisoned for life, or fed to their pets. It could have been a kid. Whats wrong with these people?

Too bad it wasn't a buck! I would have liked to have seen the confused look on the pythons face when it got to the antlers!

How are all the old people that retire to Florida going to outrun all the alligators, crocodiles, and giant snakes coming out of the everglades? At the rate these creatures are multiplying it will turn into a feeding frenzy in a few years!

Some people made money importing these snakes into the U.S. - legally. It makes you wonder what people who make policy were thinking????? Here is a creature with no natural enemies, grows over 20 feet long, eats anything smaller than it (including people) and I guess they figured that no one would release them into the wild when they got too big. What a bunch of idiots.

"Nature" on PBS just did a show on the python problem in the Everglades. They were released by owners when they got to big and couldn't afford them anymore. There are only two preditors against the python large alligators & humans. If they continue to breed in the wild endangered species protected in the Everglades are at risk. This is another example of irresponsible humans screwing the eco-system up. Florida has amnesty days where owners of pets they can't afford or handle can be turned in for adoption. Some people just don't care.

It's an evasive species, and we can't allow it to not be caught! Idiots get these pets and when they get too big they let them loose,or they escape!

LH. Screw the snake. 16 feet and you are lunch. Many many exotic animals lose in the Everglades including the rock python. I have seen them in the PI at 20 feet and they will attack humans.

It's sad that the dumb masses think wild animals are "cool". Just like the idiot that recently let his zoo loose and then blew his brains out and the lady that got her face ripped off by a chimp... Nothing good can come of it...
