    16-year-old becomes youngest person to pass Japan's accountant exam+

    A 16-year-old applicant passed Japan's certified public accountant examination this year, becoming the youngest person to succeed in the qualifying test, the examiners' board said Monday.

    There is no age limit for taking the exam. The previous youngest person to pass the test was an 18-year-old.

    The Certified Public Accountants and Auditing Oversight Board did not disclose any other details of the successful applicant, including sex and prefecture of residence.

    The average age of those who passed this year's exam was 26.3, while the oldest person among them was 61.

    Of a total of 25,648 applicants, 2,041 people passed the exam, down 8.4 percent from last year. The pass rate for the test also fell 2.5 percentage points to 8.0 percent.

    The number of female test-takers who passed the exam totaled 362 and accounted for 17.7 percent of all successful applicants, according to the board.

    The Financial Services Agency has said it plans to reduce the number of people who pass the exam to around 2,000 each year because accounting firms and other companies have been putting off expanding recruitment of certified public accountants due to lingering economic stagnation.
