17 die in Haiti crash after bus drives off cliff

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — An overcrowded bus plunged over a cliff in a coastal city in southwestern Haiti and at least 17 people died, including two children, a Haitian official said Sunday.

Silvera Guillaume of Haiti's Civil Protection Office said the accident occurred in the town of Roseaux at midday Saturday.

Another 17 people were injured and were taken to a hospital in the nearby town of Jeremie, he said.

Guillaume initially reported 23 people had died, but he revised the death toll a few hours later, saying he had received an erroneous report from the hospital.

Officials were still investigating trying to determine why the bus veered off the road.
