$173,000 in fees sought in RI prayer banner case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Lawyers for the 16-year-old Rhode Island atheist who sued over a prayer banner displayed at a public high school are asking a court to order the city of Cranston to pay $173,000 in attorneys' fees.

The request was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Providence by lawyers retained by the Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. The lawyers sued Cranston and its school committee on behalf of Jessica Ahlquist, a junior at Cranston High School West.

Earlier this month, a judge ordered the removal of the banner. The school committee has not decided whether to appeal the ruling.

The ACLU says Ahlquist is entitled to $25 in damages. The group also says the $173,000 request does not cover all the time spent on the case.

The fees charged by the lawyers show exactly what this is all about. They win only by spending more money than the other party.... Disgusting. And they claim the name ACLU
What about the liberty of all the other pupils ?

When the banner was put up, students were not afraid to honor God and Country, now they are taught to think only of themselves

The Solution is simple...1. As the Banner is Historical in nature, label it as such and rehang it. As a matter of history, it reflects on an era past, and the thoughts , hopes and ideals of the times. . 2. Tell the ASCLU that thay can pound sand, and pay for their own #$%$ fees, No One asked them to get involved, they volunteered. So they pay for their own , if " little miss athesist" asked them, then SHE should pay for their attorney fees. 3 And finanally, since countless numbers of students have attended; and graduated from Cranston High School West in the 49 years since 1963, and NO One has complained, she is obviously a troublemaker.. so ..Expell Her from the school district!! School District rules define proper STUDENT conduct, and she is Obviously in Violation. Her behavior has polarized the rest of the students; had a negative the staff; and has caused significant disruption of the learning environmemt; and caused strife in theb local community. . 4.Then little miss Jessica Ahlquist's parents can then explain to her that despite her smug smile as seen on her way into court, she is playing in the Real World, and the Real World seldom forgives and never forgets. Winning a battle is not the same as winning the war, and if she wants her rights as an athesist to be respected; then she #$%$ well better start resepecting the rights of the rest of us!!

Prayer has no place in public schools, just like facts have no place in religion. People with delusional religious mental disorders should not be able to throw their crap in my direction. Government and schools are not the venue for proselytizing for good reason. Practice your beliefs, but don't expect me to practice your belief as well. I have my own. By the way, BELIEF: An Anglo-Saxon word the root of which is "lief". Literally, "wish"'. Sorry about that...

Too bad the school committee doesn't understand separation of church and state - looks like the city is on the hook for the committee pushing their religious belief upon the public school students.
Would of been much cheaper just to keep their prayer banner in a church, temple, and/or mosque rather than in a public school system.

This proves that atheism, supported by evidence-based science, is not a religion and that religion is just that, religion. However, philosophy should be taught in our (US) schools as it is regularly done in Europe. Keeping philosophy out of the school curriculum allows religion to claim a monopoly on morality and lofty thoughts. Students could be exposed to philosophic and literary messages on school walls when such ideas are not religious but rather ethical and logical in nature.

Someday there will be a reckoning and the ACLU and their associates will be held accountable for what tried to do to this country.

Yes, I'm glad they had to take it down-- but the settlement will only hurt the school district, monetarily .Why didn't they resolve it by taking it down. The next assault will be the under "god" in he salute to the flag they added under Ike.. I feel people have the right to practice religion and I'll defend that but not in state or community places. Respect the constitution
