18-year-old Pittsfield man shot teen after house was egged, criminal complaint says

GREEN BAY – An 18-year-old Pittsfield man is charged with three felonies after a 16-year-old boy was shot Wednesday night.

Jackson Rego is charged with one count of first-degree reckless injury and one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, both with a dangerous weapon, as well as endangering safety with use of a dangerous weapon by firing a gun into a vehicle.

His initial appearance in Brown County Circuit Court was scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday.

According to the criminal complaint:

  • Around 9:42 p.m. May 1, deputies from the Brown County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to Pittsfield for a shooting on River Forest Hills Drive. A teen was shot while in a car, which then was driven to an address on Woodside Drive, about 2½ miles away.

  • Upon arrival to the Woodside Drive address, deputies found a sedan with a 16-year-old boy inside with a gunshot wound to his side. He was taken to St. Vincent Hospital, where he was treated for a wound on his left side, beneath his ribs.

  • The 16-year-old told deputies he was standing up through the car's sunroof when he was shot.

  • Deputies saw a Snapchat message on the boy's phone, believed to have been sent from Rego, with threatening comments.

  • Deputies arrested Rego at his house. Rego told officers he was sitting in his vehicle parked in the driveway of his house when he heard a noise from behind. He got out of the vehicle and saw eggs had been thrown at the driveway. He said he saw the vehicle driving away, northbound.

  • Rego said he posted something about the egging on Snapchat, and a friend contacted Rego informing him who was possibly involved. Rego said the friend told him it was another teen Rego "had issues with in the past."

  • The vehicle then came back around a second time, and Rego said he shot an AR-15 he got from the garage twice — one warning shot, and then a second shot he claimed was aimed toward the vehicle but "at the ground."

  • The injured teen said that around 7:45 p.m. May 1, he had received a text message from his friend asking if he wanted to egg Rego's house. Around 8:15 p.m., the friend picked him up and they picked up two cartons of eggs from a Kwik Trip in Pulaski. After that, the teen's friend drove around "until it was dark out," then they drove by Rego's house "multiple times," and "throwing eggs at it each time."

  • The teen said that "after a few rounds," he "saw Jack come outside and flip us off." He said he then suggested they drive by one more time, because they still had eggs left. On that last drive by Rego's house, they noticed he had a gun. The injured teen said he "thought Jack was just threatening us with the gun, I never thought he would shoot at us." He said Rego fired two shots, hitting the teen with the second shot.

  • The other teen who was driving the car said he, the injured teen, and Rego all go to the same school in Pulaski. The driver said that after egging Rego's house, he and his friend returned to his friend's house, but decided to go back out after Rego messaged his friend on Snapchat.

  • Around 2:49 a.m. May 2, officers executed a search warrant at Rego's house, where they found one rifle shell casing in the grass by a vehicle, and another under Rego's bed. They also found a black rifle in Rego's bedroom closet.

  • Rego provided a written statement to a sergeant at the Brown County Sheriff's Office, saying he told the two teens to return to his house and when the car drove by again and he saw someone come out a window "and start bringing up his hands," he fired two shots. Rego said he believed both rounds were shot toward the vehicle but at the ground.
