$1M-plus Chinese cups tops for 'Antiques Roadshow'

NEW YORK (AP) — An Oklahoma man has more than a million reasons to be happy he brought his collection of Chinese rhinoceros horned cups to be appraised by experts with the PBS series "Antiques Roadshow."

PBS says the collection was judged Saturday by Asian art expert Lark Mason at a taping in Tulsa, Okla., to be worth $1 million to $1.5 million. That's easily the most valuable item brought in for appraisal in the history of "Antiques Roadshow," which will air its 16th season next year.

Show spokeswoman Judy Matthews says the collection owner was surprised by the appraisal and quipped, "I guess I won't have to rely on Social Security anymore." The owner wishes to remain anonymous.

Matthews says there's a hot market now for Chinese art.

Just once, I would like to see the following:
Appraiser: "Your item is worth $100,000"
Owner; " OMG, OMG! You're kidding, you're kidding!"
      Appraiser: "Actually. I am. "

Feel good unless you’re a rhino. I hope they don't get a dime for them. Rhino's are severely endangered. Anyone who buys parts, furs, ivory horns, etc., even though the animal is already dead, pushes animals closer to extinction because it will increase, or give the impression of increasing, demand. Even this article will increase interest in owning rhino bowls. It’s actually disgusting.

but squishy people on the other hand are plentiful and should be killed.

Considering that the cups are around 400 years old it's a bit late to worry about the death of the rhino.

Now that is a happy story.

I love Lark. He's the only appraiser I've ever seen tear up on the show, actually being moved by the beauty of an object. He's just wonderful.

And again, no pictures... Yahoo hasn't got a clue -

Did it occur to you that maybe there aren't any pictures? The show was just taped on Saturday, and won't be edited or broadcast for months. Any video would be copyrighted by PBS anyway. Looks like you'll just have to settle for reading about it.

If you paid attention while you were reasing you saw that the owner requested to remain anonymous....so I'm sur ehe didn't wnat photos of himself or his expensive items shown for the world to see.

So quick to harp on Yahoo for not having a picture..... Yahoo gets the feed from the Associated Press who is the one who provides the story and picture.... Good golly, get a clue!!!

He probably got them at a garage sale for $5.99. Would not be the first time I had heard of a story like that happening to someone else......
      • jeff 9 mths ago
If I ever went to a garage sale where the price was 5.99 I wouldn't by a thing.

Of all the shows I have watched, all the prices they quote are * majorly * overinflated ... remember that real value, and what they quote on television are two totally different things.

The appraisers are very specifc in giving various types of values: Auction Estimate, Retail, and Insurance/Replacement Value. Insurance value is always the highest, then Retail, and finally Auction value. If the person is not planning to sell the piece, the appraiser generally gives the Insurance or Replacement Value, which is significantly higher than the Auction Value, because it removes the possibility that the right buyer won't be in the room at the auction, that the sale is not competitive enough, etc. It accounts for tracking down the SAME item and paying whatever is asked. Therefore, it will be higher.

I agree with Richard. They are generally way over the top on the value of most items for auction and replacement prices. Several years ago, the highest value Antiques Roadshow gave an object was a Native American Chief's blanket, the appraiser gave the value of $500,000 dollars. It was beautiful and rare but I saw it in an antiques trade paper (Maine Antiques Digest) several months later when the owner decided to sell it. The auction result for the blanket was $220,000. I've been in the business for 18 years, and roll my eyes at some of the appraised values, weather its for auction or replacement value. It's in the appraiser's best interest to give the highest possible value, Antiques Roadshow generates consignments for the auction companys they work for.

Unfortunately, he probably can't sell them easily unless there's an exception in the CITES restrictions on antiques. Rhinos are endangered and trade in their parts is banned. If he can sell them, he should donate a token part of the proceeds to rhino conservation for his good fortune. It never hurts to have a little good karma in the bank.

There are exception to the CITES on antique
      • SeeJaneBrowse 9 mths ago
They are over 200 years old, so they are exempt.
      • SeeJaneBrowse 9 mths ago
Agree on the donation - give back to these beautiful and majestic animals.

    • LuckyLindy321  •  9 mths ago
FYI - These appraisers are pretty accurate, but of course there is a difference when these items are actually sold at auction. Not mentioned on Antiques Roadshow is that if these items sell at an auction, the auction company takes a 20-35% cut of the final sales price from the seller and takes a 20-25% premium from the buyer.
