ASHLAND COUNTY ― Two cattle died and I-71 northbound was reduced to one lane for about four hours Sunday night after a cattle trailer caught fire, the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Ashland Post reported.

Troopers responded to the report of a trailer fire at 9:54 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 71 northbound at the Ashland and Richland County line.

According to the Ashland post, the fire involved the right rear tire assembly of a cattle transporter semi-trailer loaded with approximately 37 cattle.

Two of the cattle died as a result of the fire. No people were hurt as a result of the fire, the patrol said.

Interstate 71 northbound was reduced to one lane for approximately four hours while the scene was cleared.

Assisting at the scene were the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Mifflin Township Fire and EMS, the Ohio Department of Transportation and Aber’s Towing, the patrol said.
