2 Sheriff's Deputies and Suspect Killed in Shooting at Panera Bread Restaurant in Maryland

Two sheriff's deputies and an elderly man, presumed to be the suspect, are dead following a shootout at a Panera Bread in Abingdon, Maryland.

According to a press release on the Harford County Sheriff Department's Facebook page, a suspect identified as 67-year-old David Brian Evans opened fire on officers when they arrived at the restaurant after being dispatched for an investigation.

"While inside the Panera, the suspect fired at the deputy, striking him," the post reads. "The suspect then fled the restaurant, and was observed heading to the area of the Parkview Apartments. A second deputy attempted to make contact with the suspect and was struck by gunfire."

Other officers who arrived at the location fired at Evans, who was later pronounced dead at the scene. He was determined to be a lone gunman.

After identifying the shooter, Harford County Sheriff's Office discovered that he had multiple warrants out for his arrest.

"Evans had at least two outstanding warrants in two states," the Facebook post continues. "One criminal warrant out of the State of Florida for assaulting a police officer and fleeing and eluding. The second is a Circuit Court civil writ issued by the Circuit Court of Harford County."

Although the agency did not identify the officers who lost their lives, the statement described both officers as long time employees of the sheriff's office.

"One deputy was a 30 year veteran of this agency, and served in the Court Services Division. The other deputy had served this agency for 16 years and was assigned to the Community Services Division," the release reads.

No bystanders were reported as injured.
