2 strong earthquakes strike Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Two strong earthquakes struck Puerto Rico within minutes of each other early Saturday.

The quakes, with magnitudes of 5.1 and 5.3 respectively, occurred three minutes apart just after 2 a.m. AST in the Mona Passage, just to the west of the island. A smaller aftershock was reported a few minutes later, and all were felt in the capital, San Juan.

The 5.1 quake was recorded at a depth of 14 kilometers (9 miles), while the 5.3 quake occurred at a depth of 17 kilometers (11 miles).

    No tsunami alert was issued.

Some residents in the island's southwest region reported power outages as well as broken items around the house. No injuries have been reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage in the neighboring Dominican Republic.

Why do people on here freak when earthquakes happen??? They are happening NOW...all the time, but most are so small you dont feel them! You only here about the big ones because it can cause life threatening events...but really, the earth is constantly changing, growing, moving...look at the ring of fire or google earth and it will show you...fascinating!

Because most of them are scientific illiterates. They never bothered to study science in school and don't want to bother with it now.

Leliu . . . yes, you could say the Earth continues to *evolve* . It*s not finished yet.
It would be great to see the Earth a thousand years from now. Where will the continents be located? Would we recognize anything? Will all life be gone due to human being's mistakes and greed? Interesting to think about.

My parents live there and couldn't go back to sleep after that. What scared them the most was the loud roar of the earth just before it started shaking.

Ken S...you didn't get the figure speaking but is not your fault. Born with limited brain activity is genetical induced on your family tree. Nevertheless, funny comment!

I have heard some people hear a crash sound but I've never been close enough to the epicenter to hear that yet, hope never will. But, I know they will start up soon all over the place, it's that time, earthquake time.

Shelly, I only heard it once as a child and still remember. I was on elementary school 5th Grade. We heard the loud sound then everything shaked so bad we could barely stand up. Those were the longest seconds of terror I have ever known.

They are starting to get stronger there and elsewhere. On the ring of fire, they already big, having them continually, but these places haven't been as frequent, they are starting to be more so though, same everywhere.

Funny how people talk about certain countries and criticize and #$%$ their freedom for lack of respect towards humanity, because they are prejudice to all races except their own. Well beware, for we all live on this "Planet" and when the time comes to meet "thy Creator" we'll see who will be spared, because I don't think anyone will be laughing "THEN" ....WE'LL SEE WHO CASTS THE FIRST STONE!

There has been many earthquakes in a variety of different regions, is there something going with our planet? I know earthqaukes are supposedly nothing to worry about, but these earthquakes in this decade have been strong, and quite frequent. Some scientists agree that something is going on, and others dismiss them, who is to believe?
      • Allank 5 mths ago
since there is nothing to do to stop them why bother worrying who is right ?
      • SDM7 5 mths ago
I am not worry, yet I think that It deserves more widespread attention, but not meant to panic anybody.

You people who rejoice in the misfortune of others are obviously hard core Americans. Well, have your fun...the day is coming when you will be humbled before the world. Don't think YOU are inmune to natural disasters. There are several brewing all around you, so careful what you wish on others, you could be on the receiving end of it.

Earthquakes in Puerto there must be some beneath sea faults. Scary for ones who do not experience them regularly like in california and japan.

It is happening people, get ready! I was telling someone just yesterday there were 25 earthquakes in this country of 2.5 or over for the whole day, as recorded on recent earthquakes from the internet, they start out kind of here and there and slowly build up, and sometimes strike very hard initially, it can be either way, anything can happen now, the same in other places. Do you know what I thought strange the other day, the Phillipines or somewhere had like a 7.3 and then no aftershocks for 2.5 or over, like there usually always is! So, the pressure is building and building somewhere, we will be surprised when it hits where we are, everybody is talking earthquakes. I heard runners talking about them for some reason the other day, on everyone's mind. People are coming and going to the Carribean right now and always, and they don't know what to expect, I'll bet nobody counted on those 25 quakes, even if some were smallish , what if they were bigger? They would be in a whole heap of trouble. My heart goes out to where these things are happening, it is biblical, 2012 almost here, and I feel some of what went on in that movie is based on reality. We shall see.

Behave rednecks! It's only an earthquake and not an act of God as so many of you claim.Besides, Puerto Ricans are US citizens, so go back to bashing the poor illegals who can't fight back because PR is out of your league.

Are they blaming global warming for these earthquakes??
