21 dead in religious rioting in central Nigeria

JOS, Nigeria (AP) — Religious rioting in the troubled central Nigeria city of Jos has killed at least 21 people in recent days, as authorities seem to be unable to curb the rising violence.

An Associated Press journalist counted 21 bodies awaiting burial at the city's central mosque Friday. At the Jos University Teaching Hospital, doctors collected at least 12 bodies bearing gunshot and machete wounds, while another 82 were wounded in fighting in the city, said Dr. Stephen Yohanna, the hospital's chief medical director.

Families had begun collecting the dead Friday, so it was unclear if the 12 dead at the hospital were included among the dead collected at the city's central mosque. The Stefanos Foundation, a local Christian group which tallies the dead and wounded in conflicts in Jos, had yet to finish a count of the community's dead Friday, said foundation coordinator Mark Lipdo.

The violence began Monday in Jos, a city on the volatile dividing line between Nigeria's largely Christian south and Muslim north. A group of rioters on Monday attacked Muslims praying over the end of Ramadan in a primarily Christian neighborhood, using knives, machetes and bows and arrows, Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency said. At least four people died Monday, as witnesses said more than 50 vehicles and 100 motorcycles were set ablaze during the fighting.

Though army and police units moved into the affected neighborhood late Monday, the violence spilled into other neighborhoods as the unrest continued throughout the week. Officials with the police and military declined to comment Friday on the violence.

Most of the dead at the hospital bore gunshot wounds, Yohanna said, typically a sign that security forces killed them.

Jos sits in Nigeria's "middle belt," where dozens of ethnic groups vie for control of fertile lands and political and economic power. While cutting across religious and ethnic lines, much of the violence finds its root in economic and political issues.

The government of Plateau state, where Jos is the capital, is controlled by Christian politicians who have blocked Muslims from being legally recognized as citizens. That has locked many out of prized government jobs in a region where the tourism industry and tin mining have collapsed in the last decades.

Human Rights Watch says at least 1,000 people were killed around Jos in 2010 and another 200 died at the turn of the year.

Christians are supposed to turn the other cheek and love their neighbors as themselves. Epic Fail.

"Turn the other cheek" means to let it slide when someone insults you, not allow your self to become cannon fodder..

The article states that most of the dead had gunshot wounds indicating that "security forces killed them". I don't know what your statement has to do with anything.

Not knives, machetes or bows and arrows.

Origin and Indigen cause problems in Nigeria esp. in jos.Original owners of jos are all christains ie Origin. As an immigrant from another state, born in jos, you are now an indigin of jos plateau by indigenalization policy.

These muslims came in & would want to takeover every thing from the original owners including producing the governor of the state. They burn down churches, kill these christains & wants to introduce sharia law in christain state where they are immigrants & minorities.

As usual, they always draw the first blood which will be avenged by christains. When major crises sets in, you will see them running back to their states of origin.

Then you don't understand religion. There are several ethical doctrines throughout the world, but there are some(Islam in particular) who go so far as to demand violence in certain conditions.

Sad that so few people making comments are not educated. At the end of WWI the five powers divided much of Africa into nations without regard for historic tribal wars. The five powers drew map lines that included Muslim and Christian tribes that occasionally invaded their former countries. As the victors of WWI forced these groups together, they guaranteed endless war. Even priests and ministers have murdered large groups of people, but its not only about religion, it is also about revenge for things that happened constantly during the past hundred years.

OTOH , why should we expect tribally oriented people with little education to be able to get along with their neighbors ?

If you read the version that was "not" written by "Ahmed Saka" you will see that the majority of Muslim deaths were caused by gunshots after they attacked the police. The majority of Christian deaths were caused by machete.
There is a reason for trying to keep the Muslims out of Jos, and that is because they keep on killing. Occasionally, there is retaliation.

This violence likely has as much to do with ethnic/tribal rivalries as "religious" differences. "Religion" is just a convenient surrogate -- another way of differentiating "us" from "them". This has been going on in Africa since since time immemorial. If all Hutus in Rwanda were Muslim and all Tutsis were Christian, we would have attributed the slaughter there to "religious" motivations. Don't get me wrong: I'm no fan of religions, and religious differences surely exacerbate the situtation. But in Africa, tribes always seems to be able to find compelling reasons to kill each other.

The only reason this news didn't make it to the headlines on yahoo and buried like this in the religion section for four days while its big headlines news elsewhere in the World is because the attackers were Christians, not Muslims. We have to be realistic and admit that the media is anti-muslim and the play fearmongering tactics when it comes to Muslims only. If it was the other way aroud we know this news will be the most popular news on yahoo headlines for at least a week.
