23 Indian children get HIV from blood transfusions

AHMADABAD, India (AP) — At least 23 children suffering from a rare genetic disorder have tested positive for HIV after receiving tainted blood transfusions in western India, officials said Monday.

The children all received free blood transfusions at a government-run hospital in the Junagadh district of Gujarat state between January and August, hospital head G.T. Dayalu said.

State government spokesman Jai Narayan Vyas said a team of doctors has been sent to investigate.

News reports quoted Vyas as saying that many of the infected children had received transfusions from more than one hospital. But the Indian Express newspaper reported that parents of the children said they had received blood only at the government hospital.

The children suffer from thalassemia, a genetic disorder that requires regular transfusions.

The children all belong to poor families.

The doctors performing the transfusions had nothing to do with screening blood donors, so why hang them "till" dead, Troll Boy? That's really civilized of you to even suggest it.

Is it Mr. Vyas? How can you say that they had HIV earlier? If so, were the parents informed of it during pre-transfusion tests? You were first to open your lid and rule books when Lokayukta was appointed by Guv in Gujarat. Now this is your department, - Go and figure out which rules you will apply - or will you just give our lame excuses...!!! Remember, you are playing politics around small 5 and 10 year old babies!! Same on you and your Boss Modi!!!

India has a really bad pharmaceutical (cottage industry) development. No wonder it extends to hospitals in sorting out blood transfusions. The industry needs to be more careful. Hope they will provide free lifelong health services to the children.

THe voice of reason. Thank you, oh florida woman for enlightening us. Perhaps you can enlighten us further as to how that has impact on the issue of HIV infection of poor children. No. I did not think so. You embarrass me as an American. Perhaps the Himmler gene continues to affect your tiny brain. Zeig Heil!

Equal access to the most appropriate available medicine is but a dream for most of the world ...while $ can't buy or guarantee health, it sure doesn't hurt.
      Sick world

The macho idiots who refuse to wear a condom because they believe it reflects on their manhood should be punished when their blood proves out to be infected by HIV. These are mostly poorly educated young to middle aged nitwits who either do not have a regular job or have a job that keeps them away from home for periods of time such as truck drivers. Oh yeah, they bring the gift of the disease home with them. Imagine the rest.

When President, Clinton authorized convicts and prisoners in US to donate blood. Untested blood was then distributed throughout the US and Canada. Check it out, an explosion of AIDS erupted in Canada. Figures never reported in US, probably too damning to politicians. Hemophaelics most affected, but surgery patients always suffered. Even today, I refuse blood, from any source but my own.

Modern medicine is a business. You get the best treatment when you pay the most money. I don't believe that everyone has a "right" to medical care because much of what is offered is not needed or only postpones the inevitable at an obscene monetary and emotional cost. While it may sound cold to hold the position that the poor will never get the same treatment as the rich, it is a fact and one that needs to be recognized. If the argument is that the poor should receive the same treatment as the rich, I ask this: Who pays for it? The doctors/hospitals won't do it for free. And if the industry knows that people will make such extreme sacrifices to pay for their services, what incentive do they have to increase quality? Even in America, for people who have insurance and the ability to pay, there are plenty of Physicians whose arrogance and packed schedule result in the patient having to pay twice and three times as much for care (and spending longer getting healed), and this is theoretically some of the best medicine available. The Docs get paid, even if they don't provide any benefit to the patient; there is little incentive for improving quality because all but the most obvious negligent cases are dismissed as falling under the category of "there are no guarantees in medicine".

This is so sad. They're infected and will probably end up dieing from a different disease than the blood disorder they already suffered from. The most innocent of all to get this disease and no fault of their own.. children. Prayers to those families. I can't imagine.

So, if I follow the logic of some people, God is punishing these children because we are not stoning gay people to death? Not a very Righteous God if that is the case.

That is only the followers and members of the Phelps family. I kind of view it as God's way of finding out who cares. Separating out the wheat from the chaff sort of thing.

While there are medications that can keep HIV at bay and allow carriers to live mostly normal lives, there is very little chance of these children's families being able to afford them. Now they're far, far worse off than before.

Blood transfusions are little good if you don't check the blood for diseases. Don't try to cut corners when dealing with people's lives.
