25 killed in slew of attacks targeting Iraq police

BAGHDAD (AP) — A slew of bombings targeted Iraqi police in Baghdad on Wednesday morning, including blasts by two suicide bombers who tried to ram their vehicles through police station gates. Iraqi officials said 25 people died and dozens more were wounded in the carnage.

The blasts were aimed at the police, generally considered to be the weakest section of the country's security forces, and emphasized that despite Iraq's security gains, long-term stability in the country is still elusive.

U.S. forces are scheduled to leave Iraq by the end of this year, and Wednesday's multi-pronged attack is likely to add to concerns about whether the Iraqi security forces, especially the police, are able to effectively secure the city. Just days ago, authorities said the Iraqi army was delaying a scheduled pullout from the cities over concerns about whether the police were ready to provide security.

In the southern Karradah neighborhood, 13 people died and 25 were wounded in a suicide car bomb attack on a police station, Baghdad police officials said. Smoke could be seen rising from the blast site as ambulances rushed to the scene, their sirens wailing. Iraqi army helicopters circled overhead.

In the mainly Shiite neighborhood of Hurriyah, a suicide car bomber targeted a police station and killed nine people, two Baghdad police officials said. Twenty-seven people were wounded in that blast.

Officials said the suicide bombers both exploded their vehicles at the outer entrances into the police stations.

"The scene was horrific," said Salim Ghadban, who was having breakfast near the Karradah police station when he heard a loud explosion.

"We saw terrified people, some injured, running in our direction, and we rushed to the attacked police station and saw burned bodies and charred cars," he said. "We helped cover the burned bodies until the ambulances arrived."

The attack in Hurriyah was especially remarkable because the neighborhood is a stronghold of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. It is almost entirely surrounded by blast walls, and access is tightly restricted through four entrances manned by the Iraqi army.

Also, a roadside bomb exploded near a police patrol in western Baghdad, killing two policemen and wounding another five, police officials said.

A parked car bomb exploded in western Baghdad targeting a police patrol but killed one civilian and injured five people. Three people were also injured by a roadside bomb that hit a police patrol in western Baghdad.

The damage could have been even worse and more widespread. Iraqi police defused two car bombs in separate areas in southwestern and northern Baghdad, and a roadside bomb was discovered on the road leading to the police academy in eastern Baghdad, a Baghdad police official said.

A hospital official confirmed the causalities. The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but such attacks are usually the work of Sunni militant groups such as al-Qaida in Iraq. They often target security forces in their attempt to destabilize the country and sow havoc.

The military spokesman for Baghdad, Qassim al-Moussawi, blamed al-Qaida for the attacks and said they were an attempt to show people that the militants are still active.

"Every three months or so, al-Qaida mobilizes all its resources to launch such attacks in one day to say that al-Qaida is still able to attack and threaten security posts," he said.

Wednesday's attacks came two days after a series of explosions targeting security officials killed 10 people in Baghdad.

The police are an especially vulnerable target among Iraq's security forces because they usually do not have the heavy weapons or equipment that the Iraqi army has. The military has received the bulk of the U.S. training assistance since the war began.

Under a 2008 security pact, all U.S. forces are to leave the country by the end of this year, although a large American diplomatic force will remain.

U.S. and Iraqi officials have been discussing whether to have a long-term but small U.S. military presence in the country after December in order to train Iraqi security forces. But they have been unable to agree on whether to give the troops the legal protections that the American government requires, and time is rapidly running out for any agreement to take effect.

"We urge the security forces to be on high alert ahead of the U.S. withdrawal," al-Moussawi said. "Security stability in Iraq seems to be far away, because we are still facing challenges."

Hans: I bet your some conservative Republican who considers them self a Christian and attends Tea-Bagger (Tea Party) gatherings. I bet you think you're a "real" American and all those black, brown, yellow and non-white people don't deserve to be in America. At the very least you think they don't work as hard as you do. To be honest - I hate hypocritical morons like you. You're probably on food-stamps and welfare (or unemployment), frustrated with your lot and interested in blaming non-white for your problems. You give America a bad name. You give Christianity a bad name. You're a coward and a fool. You will be responsible for what you do and what you say when you stand before God. I hope you think about that.

No one thought Iraq would make it this far. These militants are just trying to make it look like Iraq has fallen back into civil war like it had in 2006-09. Now there is building, real Iraqi sovereignty, jobs, a semi-functional government and an Iraqi Army that stands and fights. These militants seek to continue the bombing and killing to embarrass the US and the democratically elected government in power there but they are few. The Iraqi's want security - they want to participate in the democratic process and for the first time, they are proud of their leaders. Every blossoming democracy has it's problems - sure, but the progress that has been made is excellent and everyone should pray for the continued progress of the Iraqi state!

#$%$ !! Let Iraq build its own country....but not at the expense of the U.S. Government. If they want to kill each other, then fine. Let's put our resources back to improving our own country and economy. AND, the same goes for Afghanistan.
      • H8 Fools 7 mths ago
It is, It is funding it's own reconstruction. We pulled funding in 2009 for reconstruction. No US funding is going to current reconstruction projects, it's all payed for by oil profits Iraq is making on it's own. We should be proud of the progress this state is making and lose the tired left-wing defeatism that plagues the democratic party today. I completely agree that we have major problems but like Iraq, we need to stay the course in Afghanistan. If we pulled out, the government there would fall and all those people who have been our allies will be killed. All of the trust we've earned over the years will be squandered. All of the progress we've made - will be undone and we will have encouraged the Taliban who has now mutated into something more horrific than it's former self. The Taliban no longer is restricted to a strictly regional perspective. They've adopted an international agenda which starts in Afghanistan and ends with the creation of an international Islamic Caliphate. They have morphed into Al-Qaida and we cannot let them win. I strongly feel that we need to give Pakistan an ultimatum: either control your tribal regions or we will. If they fail to kick the Taliban out of their country, we need to invade and destroy the Infrastructure they've created to maintain their insurgency in Afghanistan. That is going to be the only way we win this war against this enemy. If your enemies go to ground, leave them no safe ground to run to.

Hey! Bush said he won the war in Iraq, remember? Nothing will ever change in the mid-east. Get our troops out now.
    • Johnny  •  7 mths ago
Time to pack up and get out! I still see the images of South Vietnamese running and grasping onto helicopters and vehicles of exiting americans with the vietcong army but a mile or two away. Once again, our leaders have led us into another unwinnable protracted war. Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq are not salvagable at this time as the people have come to think of democracy as a bloody fiasco. There are no bold citizens proclaiming give me liberty or give me death.
      • H8 Fools 7 mths ago
Um, I say give me Liberty or give me Death. I served in Iraq and don't let these news stories fool you. Iraq is free, the government is elected and the people are participating in the political process. You've got to get past that Vietnam syndrome. That war was a totally different animal than the two we are involved with. First, there are no US troops fighting in Iraq (other than some special forces units that are working with Iraqi internal security forces). We are set to leave Iraq completely in December. Second - Afghanistan is a different situation and I would like to go into it but something tells me you just don't care so I am not going to waste my time.

Johnny: There was no such entity as a Vietcong Army, The North Vietnamese Army launched a full scale conventional attack with tANKS ANd HEAY ARTILLERY, EVENsome AIR SUPPORT, IN 1975, after the US Democratic Party had refused to supply the ammunition
, guns, and other war materiel whose supply was specified and accepted even by the Communist North even in the armistice agreement. And units of the South Vietnamese Army did fight well even in extremis. Fought even better than the South Koreean Army at a late date, as seen by one reporter who covered both conflicts

Johnny, do inform yourself before making wild charges..

O.K. it seems Iraq is pretty much at a point where it needs to make some pretty tough choices!!!! And it looks like the U.S. seems to think our people who remain will not have legal protection,(will they have immunity to religous oriented Islamic Law) ????? What are we doing there, that needs legal protection????? How much training do we need to support???? (" U.S. and Iraqi officials have been discussing whether to have a LONG TERM BUT SMALL U.S. military presence in the country after December in order to train Iraqi security forces. But they have been unable to agree on whether to give the troops the LEGAL PROTECTIONS that the American government requires, and TIME is rapidly RUNNING OUT for ANY agreement to TAKE EFFECT.")

IRAQ CURRENCY SCAM WARNING! This is a warning about the currency or money of Iraq, The scam is that there are internet sites selling Iraqs currency and telling people that some day, like really close in the future its going to be worth a fortune. And theses internet sites will lead you to believe that your fortune will even happen today or this week. They even have rehearsed phone calls to suck you and others in, to lead you to believe, that the time is getting short and the need to buy the ultra cheap Iraq currency is now, because its revalue can happen any moment and make you a millionare. There are a number of sites where these scammers post stories about banks and thier screens saying things are happening. Or they will say they have friends that are high up or friends in Iraq that say the currency is going to revalue any moment. These scammers even make multiple posts on web sites under different names and create rumors and fabricated stories . And they have secret intel that they cannot mention right now or they will get in trouble. The stupid part is they are regestered with the US treasury Dept. and the BBB. Which they are but, its the way they sell the currency with lies ands stories. These people are like the crooked used car salesman, that will tell you anything to buy that hunk of junk. This scam has been going on sense 2004. Well guess what, the only ones getting rich are the people selling Iraqs worthless money. The scammers keep the cirlce of hype going day in and day out to keep people excited about being rich quick. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED DO NOT FALL FOR BUYING THE CURRENCY OF IRAQ! The only truth is, if you fall for it you will be greatly disappointed and thats a fact! Thiers is a guaranteed lie! This is only a drop in the ocean of what theses people are doing. Heres one name of the many scammers " Tony Renfrow" , bring his name up on the net, this guy is one of the biggest misleading scammers and you can research his history and you will find others attached to him. Like as was stated hes only one of many. Some of these scammers will charge you $14.95 a month to lissen and read thier garbage on a membership only web site and they do this buy your credit card from paypal by setting up an automatic payment each month on your card. Ask yourself this question, if you had the currency of Iraq and you bought it for less than a penny on the dollar, would you sell it if it was going to be worth millions? Heck no! But theses scammers will also bring God and Jesus into thier scam and call it a great blessing that should be shared. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!! They will mislead you anyway they can to get your dollar!

More Sunni on Shia violence, they have been killing each other for over a thousand years now, and nothing we say or do will stop it, it is Allah's population control project.
    • Agri  •  7 mths ago
We should get our troops out of Iraq before the end of the Year. Let the government of Iraq deal with their own problems. The Sunni and the #$%$ Muslim have been fighting for Hundredth of years. Allah's followers are fighting others Allah's followers. This is a contradiction by itself. Let them solve their own problems with the help of Iran their new allies. We shouldn't sacrifice another American life for the sake of Iraq.
