3 inmates killed in Mexico prison near deadly riot

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Three inmates were killed Tuesday in a northern Mexico prison a few miles (kilometers) from the penitentiary where authorities say 44 gang members were massacred this week by prisoners from a rival drug cartel.

Nuevo Leon state public security spokesman Jorge Domene Zambrano said the latest victims, two men and a woman, had been booked into the Topo Chico prison Monday on suspicion of kidnapping.

Domene said the men were stabbed to death in the prison's observation area and the woman in the infirmary.

At the time the three suspects were presented to the media in early February, Domene described them as members of the Gulf drug cartel, like the 44 prisoners slain Sunday at the prison in nearby Apodaca.

That massacre may have been the deadliest prison killing in at least a quarter century in Mexico. The prison's director and 18 guards are being held on suspicion of allowing imprisoned Zeta gang members to escape.

Nuevo Leon Gov. Rodrigo Medina said 16 guards have confessed to aiding the escape.

Late Tuesday, about 50 women related to inmates clashed with police outside the Apodaca prison and set fire to a pile of cardboard and wood at a gate. Crying women threw stones at officers when they poured water on the fire from behind the mesh gate, while others tried to climb the fence.

The women told a local television station they were desperate for information about their loved ones inside the prison.

Fighting between the Zetas and Gulf drug cartels has brought a surge of violence and other crimes to the Monterrey region, which is Mexico's third largest.

On Tuesday, gunmen opened fire on a group of taxi drivers waiting at a taxi stand outside a shopping center in Monterrey, killing five.

Witnesses told police the gunmen fired from a passing car, Domene said.

He said authorities were trying to determine if the attack was related to the prison violence.

Taxi drivers are often hired by drug cartels and equipped with high-end handheld radios to work as lookouts.

If the police are corrupt and the military is corrupt, what would make them think that prison guards werent corrupt? The entire country is corrupt from the President on down.

Stoner, you are a outrifgt liar, The Mexican president, the Marines, the Army and now the Juarez Police are doing a good job at cleaning up the mess, they have taken several of the cartel and their bosses, stopped many shipments of drugs and also stopping a lot of illegals before they crossed into America, but it takes time. The cartels have more money thanks to the addicts and more guns thanks to Holder then the government. If someone would tell Obama and Holder to butt out of down here and enforce the laws that are already on the books in America and not sue states up there, the clean up would go a lot quicker.

Haha, Mexico has hosts over 1 million permanent US citizens, and is visited by 22+ millon international tourists every year, these news are just to keep the dollars home... (I live in Ajijic Mexico since 2000) europe has refused to issue travel warnings to Mexico, arguing that traveling to some areas of the US is far more dangerous...

I am retired 70 year old widower American on social security and through the churches help poor people and victims of crime down here and I know first hand what Holder's guns helped the cartels do. The government, military and some of the police are doing something or there would not be a story about the prisons.

You armchair commandos post your ideas on how to fix a very big problem. A lot of you are Racists and/or cowards, hide behind a keyboard and post hate. You are either a part of the problem or a part of the solution, if a part of the problem, sit down, shut up and stay out of the way. If not, get out of your comfort zone and do something to help either in America or Mexico. If nothing else get out and VOTE.
