3 major road accidents in China kill 56 in 1 day

BEIJING (AP) — Three major road accidents in China killed 56 people on the last day of a weeklong holiday, including 35 people who died when a bus collided with a car on a northern expressway, state media reported Saturday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the bus flipped over after crashing into a car in the port city of Tianjin on Friday afternoon, injuring 18 others.

Xinhua cited a Tianjin traffic official as saying the bus was speeding and that many passengers were thrown out of the vehicle when it hit the car and rolled over.

In eastern Anhui province, at least 10 people died and 19 were injured in a 24-vehicle pileup on an expressway as foggy weather reduced visibility, the Beijing News daily said.

Eleven people in a van were killed when a truck crashed into the vehicle in central Henan province, the newspaper said.

Serious traffic accidents are common in China due to often overloaded vehicles and poorly trained drivers who often ignore traffic laws.

Friday was the end of a weeklong holiday marking China's National Day.

Never before had China have these types of traffic accidents since it became progressive. More people and vehicles running into the same road and streets whose size didn't changed. But it illustrates how the Chinese love and value their homes and families in the provinces. It's to be at "home at all cost" for them. But sometimes, amid the seemingly chaotic traffic, their is a sad price to pay, an excitement turning into a tragedy, which includes their very own lives.

the accident was caused by a bus, and there is no holidays here now, but they do try everything to get home for spring festival, national holiday is not even in the same league.

China will definitely go through some growing pains as far as driving is concerned. There are so many first time drivers there that this kind of stuff is bound to keep happening.

Racist APE PRESS has nothing better to do than report on auto accidents in China. How many innocent civilians have American military forces killed today around the world? Talking about MURDER is more important than accidents.

It all boils down on one's driving altitute. The ways I saw how the people in China are driving, I feel the authorities should imposing stricter rules to curb bad driving habits.

      1) Big trucks / buses hogging the fast lanes.
      2) Using high beam while driving at night & never bother to dim their lights even when there are vehicles coming in the opposite direction or infront of them.
      3) Simply stopping or turning w/o consideration for other motorists who are following them closely behind. Usually the taxi drivers are the main culprits here.

These events are tragic. But many of the commenters seem to blame communism or Asian for them. Here is a little background.
In the US, the total death from traffic accidents dropped from 51091 in 1980, 44599 in 1990 and 40945 in 2000 to 32708 in 2010. If we use the lowest 2010 number, then there are 90 people die in one day. CHina now sells more cars than the US and has 5 times of the population. And China's traffic death of 80000 a year is lower than the US in terms of population.

On this aspect, China is still far behind the "Super Power" U.S.A. In U.S.A., car accident kills more than 40,000 people and injures more than 6 milllion each year!

1 billion+ people and 56 die in one day odds aren't that bad
But China is a mess when it comes to traffic laws and the bus driver's need to understand that safety comes first. They get bonuses for being early I believe...same in S Korea.

When I was in China; I understood why America will never be able to fairly compete with China on an even trade platform. To the Chinese; life is cheap and plentiful. They have no environmental law enforcement and as a result live in filth and poison, they have miserable wages and lives; and they are treated like machines by their employers. In what way is free trade going to benefit America other than to line the pockets of a few American corporations?

I disgusted by every comment on this page, you are dreadful people to laugh and make repulsive remarks at the loss of any human life despite creed or colour. I live in China and I am terrified of crossing the road every day but many of these people cannot afford nor have a choice in life but to accept whatever mode of transport is offered to them. What about the recent Denver bound bus crash would you like to read nasty comments about Americans dying. NO, so shut up and get some manners. You should hang your heads in shame!!!

The Chinese are CRAZY drivers! I cannot believe this does not happen on a daily basis over there. I thought the grey hairs in Florida were bad drivers until my first visit to China over a decade ago. I have been back there dozens of times since and although they are becoming more modernized every day, you won't catch me getting behind the wheel over there!
    • JamieM  •  7 mths ago
make fun of loss of life, is just sick, sadly, your all gonna have to face a loss one day, would you like to think people are making jokes when that time comes?,
wow, you all like kids, but cynical, kids don't have that, thankfully

Chinese traffic police does a terrible job enforcing traffic laws. When I was in China, I saw cars coming at me on a one way street, and i'm going at the right direction! Drivers park their cars anywhere they want, they speed by as much as 150% over on poor roads, they drink hard liquor before driving, and brag about it.
The Chinese traffic police need to patrol more, and increase fines. It may be very hard to monitor traffic violators in a country of 110 million cars, but they'll have to be able to guarantee the minimal safety on the road
