3-vehicle crash preceded fatal mass pileup in Fla.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Florida Highway Patrol says there was a three-vehicle crash just hours before a series of pileups killed 10 people on the same stretch of Interstate 75.

According to the report released Monday, heavy smoke and fog resulted in low visibility along I-75 south of Gainesville late Saturday. About 11:55 p.m. Saturday, a tractor-trailer hit a Toyota in the northbound lanes. A Lexus then hit the back of the truck.

Authorities say a passenger in the Lexus was sent to the hospital in serious condition.

The Highway Patrol closed I-75 and nearby U.S. 441 a short time later, due to worsening road conditions. But the highway was then reopened early Sunday and a series of pileups began around 3:45 a.m., some of them fatal.

The semi's drive like maniacs on I-75. They ride the back bumper of cars and cause dangerous situations because they are so close to the car in front of them that that car cannot see around them to see if it is safe to change lanes so that #$%$ truck drive can have the lane to themselves. It is time to crack down on the tailgaters on that highway.

Take the trucks off the road and you would starve to death a-o.

If the FHP did their job, no vehicles would be going faster than 70

This is simply a tragedy, but signs are posted during these type of conditions and there should be some ownership on the individuals driving too fast for the conditions. In heavy fog and smoke even 60mph can be too fast.
People need to take responsibility for their own actions, we cannot always rely on police or state troopers to be everywhere at all times.

Sounds like the state of Florida has some serious explaining to do. Who reopens a freeway with low visibility at 3:45AM? Doesn't sound like good judgment to me.

Does anyone in Florida know how to drive?

Uhm, can you not read? Smoke and fog were mixed, which makes it hard to see.

This freeway should have been closed until Visibility improved.

Totally inexcusable. I see a class action lawsuit coming and duly so. I hope the State pays dearly for this.

State is not paying for anything, cuz they're broke
      • scottrey 3 mths ago
Big, where do you get your info? Things are tough for the state of Florida just like most states but we are by no means broke.

Instead of blaming the government for not shutting the highway, how about blaming the morons who never thought that, "Hmmmm......It's night, there's fog. I can't see further than a foot in front of my vehicle. Perhaps I should drive a bit slower than my usual 80 mph." Those idiots in Florida all drive like it's the last lap at Indy and it's anybody's ball game until the finish line is reached. Quit blaming the government for your stupid actions.

Yes, lets blame the troopers for this tragedy when any common sense moran can determine, without even ever seeing this stretch of road, that every one of these vehicles were driving TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS! Get a life morans and start accepting responsibility for your actions! When you start pointing your finger just remember there are 3 fingers pointing back at you.

FHP response? Their spokesman, Lt. Patrick Riordan said "we are open to doing things better...." Yeah.. that was the response after 10 deaths and 21 injured.... MYFOX Orlando has him on tape.....
