36M lbs. of turkey recalled in salmonella outbreak

WASHINGTON (AP) — Meat giant Cargill is recalling 36 million pounds of turkey after a government hunt for the source of a salmonella outbreak that has killed one person in California and sickened dozens more. The Agriculture Department says it is one of the largest meat recalls ever.

USDA and the Minnesota-based company announced Wednesday evening that Cargill is recalling fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced at the company's Springdale, Ark., plant from Feb. 20 through Aug. 2 due to possible contamination from the strain of salmonella linked to 76 illnesses and the one death.

All of the packages recalled include the code "Est. P-963," according to Cargill, though packages were labeled under many different brands. Many of the recalled meats are under the label Honeysuckle White. Other brands include Riverside Ground Turkey, Natural Lean Ground Turkey, Fit & Active Lean Ground Turkey, Spartan Ground Turkey and Shady Brook Farms Ground Turkey Burgers. The recall also includes ground turkey products packaged under the HEB, Safeway, Kroger, Randall's, Tom Thumb and Giant Eagle grocery store brands.

The recall also includes some ground turkey that isn't labeled at all and some that went to food service establishments, according to Cargill.

Illnesses in the outbreak date back to March and have been reported in 26 states coast to coast. Just before the recall announcement Wednesday, CDC epidemiologist Christopher Braden said he thought health authorities were closing in on the suspect. He said some leftover turkey in a package at a victim's house was confirmed to contain the strain of salmonella linked to the outbreak.

In announcing the recall, Cargill officials said all ground turkey production has been suspended at the Springdale plant until the company is able to determine the source of the contamination.

"Given our concern for what has happened, and our desire to do what is right for our consumers and customers, we are voluntarily removing our ground turkey products from the marketplace," said Steve Willardsen, president of Cargill's turkey processing business.

The Minnesota-based company said it was initiating the recall after its own internal investigation, an Agriculture Department investigation and the information about the illnesses released by the CDC this week.

A chart on the CDC's website shows cases have occurred every month since early March, with spikes in May and early June. The latest reported cases were in mid-July, although the CDC said some recent cases may not have been reported yet. The CDC said the strain is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics, which can make treatment more difficult.

The states reporting the highest number sickened are Michigan and Ohio, with 10 each. Texas has reported nine illnesses; Illinois, seven; California, six; and Pennsylvania, five.

Twenty states have one to three reported illnesses linked to the outbreak, according to the CDC. They are Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

The CDC estimates that 50 million Americans each year get sick from food poisoning, including about 3,000 who die. Salmonella causes most of these cases, and federal health officials say they've made virtually no progress against it.

Government officials say that even contaminated ground turkey is safe to eat if it is cooked to 165 degrees. But it's also important that raw meat be handled properly before it is cooked and that people wash their hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling the meat. Turkey and other meats should also be properly refrigerated or frozen and leftovers heated.

The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours of eating a contaminated product. It can be life-threatening to some with weakened immune systems.

"It is regrettable that people may have become ill from eating one of our ground turkey products," said Cargill executive Willardsen, "and, for anyone who did, we are truly sorry."

My turkey meat turned out to be some of the recalled also. We had just started substituting ground beef with ground turkey to eat healthier, but now I doubt I'll buy it again. The store mgr. tried to say that any turkey bought from his store would not have been bad b/c all the recalled turkey had already been pulled from their shelves. But the clerk called the Meat Mgr. to the front and he told me to go home and see if it had P963 on it and there it was in my freezer bigger than Dallas, P963 on it (sell by Feb 2011-Aug.2, 2011) I purchased it on 7/30/11! The next day I took it in and got my money back. I was hoping to get the lazy store Mgr. again to rub it in his face, but he wasn't there. LOL So grateful my husband didn't cook it 2 nights before me reading this article. Makes me sick just thinking about "what if" we had eaten it.

Wait a dog gone minute! This meat was tainted clear back in March? And they are just now four months later recalling it? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS SCENARIO?

        LACK OF OVERSIGHT AND REGULATION
      • Frank 9 mths ago
Um, no. 1-when you're running orders of millions of pounds of meat, it's gonna be difficult to keep track of a few errant orders. 2-Regulation, ironically, makes it harder to track of things, not to mention adds more problems on top of what the company already has.

So are many other meat products which are not produced properly. I bet the price of turkey is doing a flop.

I don't know about you, buy I like to cook my meat...not only for taste, but it generally tends to be safer (like last years egg recall and every other food recall)

Cargill is one of the largest employers of illegals. They have a hog plant in Illinois that is at least 85% illegals and do nothing about it.They actively recruit these people at the borders with big signs
      • geneq 9 mths ago
Have you reported them to the authorities? When you say borders, do you mean Cargill goes to the Southwest U.S and recruits workers?
      • Chuck 9 mths ago
All of these large employers of illegals vote GOP, contribute big, big bucks to get GOP types elected. Time for a real Tea Party.
      • Marianna 9 mths ago
so you think illegals put salmonella in your meat?? no , those huge corporations allow this to happen, the government is doing much because they control so much and make billions every year

Remember when we were all kids, you never saw stuff like this back then ever thing was safe, and now 30 years later that has all changed

Another reason to support your local farms and buy local - you know where your food is coming from.
    • hookedonharley  •  9 mths ago
Combined, Congress weighs in at 36M pounds? that's a LOT of poisoned turkeys.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
No worries people! The Cargill outfit will not lose a penny! They will "declare a loss," meaning, taxpayers will compensate them for their "loss," even if it was caused by their own practices. We can afford to pay these people to poison and then throw away 70M burgers, but we can't afford meals for poor people. Some think failed banks should be allowed to close up shop. I say the Food Industry could use some of the same medicine.

This is one of those times I'm really happy that I paid attention to the food safety refresher part of a cooking class I took for fun. Also have a farmers market here and a few of the organic farms not too far away take orders for poultry/beef/pork. Got to admit I like knowing where our food is coming from and being able to meet the farmers.

I have mixed emotions on this issue. I have no doubt that I have already eaten lots of this contaminated meat. I say this because we buy multiple packages at a time (on sale) and freeze them. We still have one package left and it is one of the recalled ones. A lot of people have eaten this meat and are OK. We are all OK because of cooking the meat thoroughly. I feel very sorry for the people that didn’t. MY biggest problem with this recall is the fact that the ground turkey products from this Cargill plant date back to Feb 20, 2011. Apparently 36 million pounds of meat were produced at this plant between Feb 20, and Aug 2, or approx. 23 weeks of production. How many pounds do you think were already consumed? Most people buy for only one week at a time. This could mean that almost 34 million pounds of this meat have already been consumed. This doesn’t leave a lot left to recall, maybe 6%. Cargill is now trying to come across as heroes in this by saying it’s a voluntary recall. Who are they trying to fool? This “voluntary” recall comes out on the same day the CDC releases its findings and we are supposed to believe this is a coincidence. I’m sick and tired of government and corporate smoke being blown up my #$%$ With the greatest amount of sarcasm possible I say the following - I’m glad Cargill reacted as quickly as they did or this story might be worse.

Maybe there should be more inspectors but more than likely the ones that are working aren't allowed to do their job because of political pressures within the agencies. Large corporations usually have lobbyists and high dollar lawyers looking out for their best interests mainly profits. Also they make large campaign donations to politicians who have no problem using their power and influence for their own gains. We all know how ethical and moral most of our politicians are. Probably the best way of protecting yourself and your family is to grow your own crops, and raise your own animals if you are able to. Buy what you can from Farmers markets and Community Supported Agriculture organizations as much as possible.

this went on for months? EVERY batch is supposed to be randomly checked for such things! ITS THE LAW! Why did flags not go up from government oversight on this? The company either failed to test, provided bogus lab tests during that time, or did the person in the gov sit on their hands?. These things are in place to save millions of lives from scumbag companies and or terrorist trying to kill us. Time to find out who dropped the ball and smack them where it hurts. THEIR WALLET!

shame they can't "recall" the turkeys in Washington...
    • Ann  •  9 mths ago
Everybody has been warned about poultry and pork for as long as I can remember. YOU HAVE TO COOK IT! Then WASH YOUR HANDS!
How many times does that need to be told before people will get it?
    • TEXAS COWBOY  •  9 mths ago
Pita says, "don't eat meat", . . the Plants Rights groups say, "don't eat plants" . What in the H_ell are we supposed to eat ? . god d_amm rocks ? . . There is probably a Rocks Rights group out there telling us not to eat rocks ! . . This whole world has went totally insane !

I use to be employed by Cargill! They stole our pensions and transfered them to another company that doesn't even have a pension program to keep from paying us! I have seen these crooks operated and rape the land! They made billions in Florida and left tax free!

Amid the news of the largest turkey recall in history, President Obama got deeply involved when he recalled the vacationing congressional turkeys back to D.C. to finance the FAA!
