'Outlander' star wears kilt to promote show

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Actor Sam Heughan and producer Ronald Moore are promoting their new TV series "Outlander" by showing a little leg.

Each wore kilts Friday to a news conference about the show, which debuts on Starz this summer. Based on a book series that mixes romance and science fiction, it features a World War II nurse who is transported in time to 18th Century Scotland.

Moore said he rented a kilt for the first time the cast read the script, found he liked it and ordered a few of his own. "If you wore these in Scotland, nobody would notice," he said.

Book author Diana Gabaldon says she understands anticipation for the show. Fans identify with the nurse and, as she put it, "they sort of want to lick" the ruggedly handsome Heughan.

Among the four people on a panel talking about the show with journalists who cover television, Caitriona Balfe, who plays nurse Claire Randall, was the only one wearing pants. She was quick to point that out to Heughan.

"We all know who wears the pants in this relationship," she said.
