4 Injured in Shootings at Michigan High School After Tip to Police That Violence Might Break Out

Four people, including a suspect, were injured in two separate shootings outside a Michigan high school Tuesday night, where police had already been stationed after being tipped off that a disturbance might occur, authorities said.

The alleged incidents occurred around 9:30 p.m. after a basketball game at Muskegon Heights High School, reports MLive.com. A male and two females were shot near the school's football stadium, and soon after, a suspect in that shooting was shot by a sheriff's deputy in the main parking lot, police said.

None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. The injured were being treated at Hackley Hospital.

Muskegon Heights interim police chief Joseph Thomas said his officers, with help from the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police, had set up a security force in the parking before the incident even happened, having been tipped off that there might be trouble following a previous fight in Grand Rapids, MLive reported.

"We did everything we could to stop this from happening," Thomas said. "I think it would have been worse if we wouldn't have been here."

PEOPLE confirmed the shootings with Thomas's office Wednesday morning, but a rep there said Thomas would not be speaking further on the matter until warrants were issued in the case.

The suspected shooter is a male from the Grand Rapids area, reports WOOD-TV. Police believe he was the sole shooter but are trying to find three other men who were with him at one point in the evening.

WZZM-TV reported that the suspect was shot by the officer after he refused an order to drop his weapon, and instead turned it toward the officer. The deputy "did what he was trained to do" in shooting the suspect, Thomas said.
