4 Planets & Moon Dominate Weekend Night Sky

A cosmic team-up of planets and the thin crescent moon is dazzling skywatchers around the world this weekend, and the celestial sky show is just getting started.

The planets Venus and Jupiter dominate the western evening sky at sunset on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 25 and 26), with the crescent moon hovering nearby. The planet Mercury joins the cosmic trio briefly just after sunset before slipping below the horizon.

The planet Mars is also making its own appearance in the evening sky, but rises in the east a few hours after sunset in its own solo celestial show.

The sky maps of Jupiter, Venus and the moon here show how the bright objects, as well as Mars later, will appear in the night sky.

"This is a great weekend to watch the sun go down. Venus, Jupiter and the slender crescent moon are lining up in the western sky, forming a bright triangle in the evening twilight," astronomer Tony Phillips of the skywatching website Spaceweather.com wrote in an alert. "These three objects are so bright, they shine through thin clouds and even city lights." [Skywatcher Photos: Jupiter, Venus & the Moon]

    Early skywatcher photos

Skywatchers have already been amazed at the sight of Jupiter and Venus shining together with the moon this week.

"To see the three brightest objects in the sky form a perfectly straight line in the west was a very beautiful and very powerful sight that I will not forget," skywatcher and nature photographer William Ott told SPACE.com in an email. Ott snapped photos of the planets and moons from a spot just outside Woodstown, N.J.

On Saturday and Sunday, the moon, Venus and Jupiter will appear as a skinny triangle of celestial lights. However, the triangle will have a slightly different configuration on each night.

Tonight, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury will align in a diagonal line (with Jupiter at the top) with the moon appearing just above and at the right of Venus. On Sunday night, the cosmic line-up happens again, but this time the moon will appear higher in the sky, just to the right of Jupiter.

"This arrangement will be visible all around the world, from city and countryside alike," Phillips explained in a NASA announcement. "The moon, Venus and Jupiter are the brightest objects in the night sky; together they can shine through urban lights, fog, and even some clouds."

If you are eager to see the planets and moon, but have cloudy or rainy weather, the online skywatching website Slooh.com will provide a free webcast of the planetary show on Saturday and Sunday each night beginning at 9:30 p.m. EST (0230 GMT) at this website: http://events.slooh.com/

    Under an earthshine moon

Planets aside, the moon is offering a dazzling sight of its own. The skinny crescent moon offers skywatchers a good chance to see the ghostly glow of earthshine — light from the sun that is reflected off of Earth to illuminate the dark portion of the moon in its current phase.

Meanwhile, Jupiter and Venus are steadily drawing ever closer together in the night sky.

By late February, the two planets will creep within 10 degrees of each other in the sky; close enough that you can block them with a closed fist held out at arm's length. On March 12 and 13, Venus and Jupiter will be so close they can be covered by just your fingertips, according to a NASA video.

This a nice piece of news. Something that's not about death or politics.

At this point, I'd pay cash money to hear news that isn't about politics.

If you look at Jupiter with a decent set of binoculars (I actually use a 16X rifle scope) you can see it's four main moons!
      • Melkor43 2 mths ago
And around eight o-clock Mars rises in the East, and about eleven o-clock Saturn rises. That same scope will show her rings.

I am able to see Venus, Jupiter, and Mars in the nightsky with the naked eye. However, I just cannot find Saturn or Mercury.

In other wards though, Venus and Jupiter are the 3rd and 4th most brightest objects in the sky after the Moon and Sun.

I always gaze up at the sky every evening to track the position of the planets and stars.

A good pair of 10x50 binoculars on a tripod will let you see Jupiters 4 largest moons and a 4.5 inch reflector telescope will let you see Jupiters cloud bands and if you are lucky the Great Red Spot
      • A Yahoo! User 2 mths ago
I got a cheap 3 inch reflector telescope from a garage sale. I could see the 4 largest moons of Jupiter, and the bands as well, but not the Great Red Spot. Also, the Saturn rings are clearly visible, and craters on the Moon. I saw a hazy patch under the Orion's belt, the Orion's nebula.

If you have binoculars or a telescope you can also see another planet. Uranus is between Mercury and Venus at aprox. RA 00h12m00s Dec 00:32:35. You should see a small blue-green disk.

Melkor43 I enjoy your posts. My grandson and I were coming in from feeding the cows night before last and he and I started finding the planets and north star etc. Out here in the country it is quite a show. It is fun to see a 7 year old enjoy the beauty of the night sky. Thanks for the information you share.

Don't forget Venus will also transit the sun in the coming months. Truly a once in a lifetime event!
      • Yahoo IsCrap 2 mths ago
Yes, the second week of June I believe. This will be the companion Venus/Sun transit to the one that happened in June 2004. After this 2nd transit this won't happen again for 200+ years.

Saturn rises in the east in the middle of the night as well, see 5 planets in one night, may be a once in a lifetime event
      • Melkor43 2 mths ago
Actually, it's seven. Earth counts too, plus even though it is just below naked eye magnitude, Uranus is between Venus and Mercury. With a set of binoculars you can see it as a small greenish-blue disk.

PS. This is not a rare thing at all to see 4-5 or six planets in a night.
      • Melkor43 2 mths ago
A more interesting and rare event will happen on May 20th. There will be a total solar eclipse starting in North East Texas, traveling through Albuquerque and passing through to Northern California then out to sea.

Then on June 6th there will be an even rarer event, a Venus transit of the sun. With a properly filtered telescope you can see the planet Venus pass between the Earth and the Sun. This will not happen again till 2117 so that would be your once in a life time event (assuming you didn't see it in 2004).

      so cool,
stayed up one night, long ago, with a little telescope and saw Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars, then just before sunrise Venus and the new moon appeared.
it's make you feel big and small all at the same time

    • hatefulhappy  •  2 mths ago
About 9 o clock tonight I walked outside and unknowingly looked up to witness this, it was pretty awesome. A light haze was overhead and the light from the moon and planets were haloed by the haze, pretty sweet. They were dominating the viewpoint I had.
    • 9 tray_Cowboy  •  2 mths ago
It is beautiful. But what's great if you're looking at it, do an about face and there is Mars, glowing reddish orange! Then, right overhead and to your right, is the constellation Orion! Hope you got clear skies too?!!!
    • I See U  •  2 mths ago
Just went out an looked WOW it's beautiful especially at 6,844 ft. elevation pitch dark crystal clear skies. WOW WOW WOW WOW OOOOOO AAAAAAA.
