41,300 in SC sign up for health care through web

Report: 41,300 South Carolinians have signed up for health insurance through federal website

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Federal officials say 41,300 South Carolinians selected a health insurance plan through the federal website over the last four months.

Numbers released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services show that one third of South Carolinians who signed up between Oct. 1 and Feb. 1 are between 55 and 64 years old. People ages 35 to 54 make up an additional 38 percent.

More than 17,000 of the sign-ups occurred in January.

Nationwide, nearly 3.3 million people have chosen a health plan through state or federally run websites since they went live. The numbers include those not yet paying premiums.

The report says 84 percent of South Carolinians who signed up through the federal website qualify for government subsidies that reduce premiums of the plan they chose.
