42 percent of Indian children under 5 malnourished

NEW DELHI (AP) — Forty-two percent of children in India younger than 5 are underweight and nearly 60 percent are stunted, a new survey found.

The Hunger and Malnutrition Survey monitored over 100,000 children in 112 districts across nine states in the country from October 2010 to February of last year.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh released the report Tuesday and called child malnutrition the country's shame.

India's economy has boomed, with growth over the last few years averaging about 8 percent, but the country's development indicators continue to be abysmal.

Singh released a summary of the report's findings and more details on its findings were not yet available.

The survey conducted by a group of non-profits was the largest such study since 2004, when the Indian government had surveyed child malnutrition. It was the first study by the group so comparative numbers are not available.

UNICEF's latest data say one-third of the world's malnourished children younger than 3 lives in India, a rate worse than sub-Saharan Africa.

There was recently an article about an Indian billionaire who said he didn't know what to do with his money .Perhaps he should put some of it into an agricultural endeavor that produces massive amounts of food .
I also recall reading about an Indian temple that discovered a treasure worth a fortune inside the temple , unimaginable riches . I wonder what a temple would do to help ? The government is going to need some serious planning . We know there is enough food and resources , they are just concentrated into those who have a great deal and wish to use it to generate more wealth . Okay , but this issue is real and so now what ?
When you have billions at your disposal you could use part of the interest on that and produce a lot of food .

Malnutrition more than starvation, you know. About half of the economy depends on agricultural sector & we're a net exporter of food. The point is poor can not afford a balanced diet. Grains are much cheaper than anything else, so they make up a large part of their diet at cost of vegetables, meat, etc. They aren't dying of starvation, but eating too much of the same food & missing out on nutrients.

Its gonna take awareness about nutrition, preventing artificial hiking, focussing on food other than grains, etc. More importantly, govt policy. I've heard Chinese govt makes it mandatory to fortify wheat flour with iron. We need something like that.

It's simplistic to blame the billionaire. He wants to invest more in India, which would create much more wealth and help solve this problem. But there is too much corruption, lack of transparency, etc. which are the real causes for these problems, not the fact that this one man is very smart and motivated and made himself into a billionaire.

What a incomplete report. What is causing the problem ? Drought , Crop failures,War, Lack of shipping, lack of stores, GREED is more than likely causing the problem yet we will never know.
      • Bob 4 mths ago
The caste system which they don't like to talk about anymore.
      • Kirk 4 mths ago
You're a #$%$ idiot, aren't you Bob? Caste system IS an issue, but not in this case. Everyone suffers from poverty, not just lower caste. You might notice Knapper, they're malnourished, not starving. Its basically a lack of balanced diet, because of ignorance about nutrition & unaffordable prices of certain foods like fruits, causing dietary deficiencies.Famines, drought, lack of govt policy also play a role.

Excuse me....but what about the Native American Indian children in the U.S.?
      • sunny 4 mths ago
Are they underweight and stunted? "Malnourished", I'll agree with, but that's a matter of education and access and preparation of the correct kinds of foods (which are abundent in America -- even free to those who qualify, income-wise). Perhaps focus should be on that education and distribution, but it takes the influence of the Native American elders/parents and the entire community to put good healthy diet choices into effect. (Something that's been a continual frustration for the educators/social workers who work with the Native communities/reservations around me). :(

    • ClaireE  •  Norwich, New York  •  4 mths ago
Just as in Africa, birth control would decrease the scarcity that is partly causing he problem. It is time for sucessful Indians to help their own with agricultural job generation.
    • FrancesH  •  Tampa, Florida  •  4 mths ago
Want to worry about malnutrition?? Go to an American Indian reservation, see people living in hovels without electricty or plumbing, living in old school buses, living on fried bread, 49% unemployment, and then tell me why we should worry about India And for all the idiots who will respond to this post with comments about casinos, the majority of tribes do NOT have casinos. The grow food, raise sheep or other farm animals, or make pottery and rugs to sell.
