5 arrested after shots fired at Tampa police officers trying to make traffic stop

Tampa police arrested five people Monday after at least one person fired shots at officers, leading to a brief pursuit, police said.

Five men were arrested, and four of them now face felony charges.

At about 8 p.m., officers in an unmarked car spotted a reckless driver heading north at a high speed on North 43rd Street from East Hanna Avenue, according to a news release from the Tampa Police Department. When the officers tried to make a traffic stop, at least one person in the car fired shots in the officers’ direction, police said.

Officers did not return fire and no one was hit by gunfire.

Officers began to pursue the car, which came to a stop near North 53rd Street and Nancy Street. Five people in the car tried to run away, with three of them fleeing into a home in the 7600 block of Sharon Drive.

The three men were arrested and charged with one felony count of burglary of an occupied dwelling, a felony, and one misdemeanor count of resisting an officer without violence. They are Tyce Hunter, 20, Jaden Roberts, 21, and Jerdavius Stubbs, 20.

Police also arrested Jamariq Travan, 21, and charged him with a felony count of fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer.

“What our officers encountered last night is another stark reminder of the dangers of working in law enforcement and I’m fortunate that each of them was able to go home to their families,” Chief Lee Bercaw said in an update Tuesday afternoon.
