    5 surprising Modern Family controversies

When it's not being showered with critical praise, the hit ABC sitcom is often hit with a storm of criticism over its stereotypes, foul language, and more

Modern Family continues to rack up accolades, awards, and spectacular ratings. But the hit sitcom has also found itself mired in a surprising number of controversies. Most recently, the show — about the hilarious interactions between the kooky members of a close-knit extended family — is courting criticism for introducing a story line based on ditzy teen Haley's sexual escapades, which some critics are calling inappropriate considering the series' broad audience. Here, a look at that and four other surprising Modern Family controversies:

    1. Haley has sex
Brace yourself for the wrath of parents groups, says TV Fanatic. According to Ty Burrell, who plays daffy patriarch Phil Dunphy, his character will soon learn that daughter Haley is no longer a virgin. "Salt will be added to the awkward wound" when he discovers that his wife Claire was already in the know. Look, says David Wharton at Cinema Blend. Nearly every TV show with a teenage character broaches this subject at some point. Hopefully Modern Family will deliver "something a lot funnier and more truthful than your typical 'very special episode.'"

    2. Lily says the f-word
On a recent episode titled "Little Bo Bleep," Cam and Mitchell's toddler daughter mimics her dads' uncouth language, and begins repeating the "f-word" at the most embarrassing of times. The young actress who plays Lily never actually said the word on set — she was instructed to say "fudge" while her mouth was blurred and her voice bleeped in post-production. Nontheless, the parents group No Cussing Club and the Parents Television Council said the joke "was in poor taste" because it encouraged children to curse. "Oh, for ____'s sake," says James Poniewozik at TIME. "What the bleep was the big deal?" The subplot was amusing and in no way glamorized cursing, as the parents groups alleged.

    3. Cam and Mitchell haven't kissed
At the height of Modern Family's breakout premiere season, fans of the gay couple Cam and Mitchell were miffed that the two very-much-in-love partners had never kissed on screen. A Facebook campaign called "Let Cam & Mitchell kiss on Modern Family!" asked, "ABC isn't afraid of gay characters, so why won't they let them show some love?" The show delivered in season two, with a water cooler episode titled "The Kiss." Short and sweet and in the background of a busy scene, the kiss "was both frustratingly and admirably understated," says Willa Paskin at New York. At least producers "didn't bow to pressure to make Cam and Mitchell's kiss a huge deal, sacrificing character and story line in the process."

    4. Gloria is a Latin stereotype
Modern Family may earn praise for its multidimensional portrayal of gay characters, but when it comes to Sofia Vergara's saucy Colombian trophy wife Gloria, "Latino stereotypes prevail," says Abel Ortiz at La Presna. She speaks English poorly, jokes about being a golddigger, constantly references crime and drugs in Colombia, and is always dressed as if she "were going to a club." While that's true, says Jessica Pauline Ogilvie at The Gloss, Modern Family has found a way with Gloria to "be smart and funny and to dole out stereotypes equally." And as far as Vergara is concerned, her performance is true to the Colombian women she knows: "I always try to remember how my mom used to scream, and my aunt, and how women were in Colombia, to make the character as funny as possible."

    5. Cam's "acting straight" storyline is homophobic
In arecent "homophobic" episode, says After Elton, Cam tries to prove his manliness by "acting straight" and picking up a woman (played by Leslie Mann) at a bar. He fails spectacularly when she quickly realizes he's gay: "It's obvious… The way you talk and walk and dress and your theatrical hand gestures." The plot perpetuated the stereotype that "straight guys can only be masculine and anyone who isn't is just gay and in denial." It's a shame that Modern Family sent a message to its 13.5 million viewers that "if a guy is girly, he is gay, no matter what he might say otherwise."

The people making these complaints have too much free time. If the actors involved weren't okay with the material, they would have told the writers or the producers and it would have been modified. Since the show is a satire of reality TV programming, everybody seems to be in on the joke except the whiners.

I have not watched this show, I don't watch tv really, but... I would probably be laughing my #$%$ off at this.

The great thing about this show is that it almost always concludes with the ultimate message of the episode and is usually about the importance of family and communication etc.
Very few shows do that - most of them just go for cheap laughs,

Easily the best comedy on TV these days. And much more based in on real life behavior than most others. People that complain that it has episodes that "send the wrong message" need to understand that it is a comedy and its main goal is to entertain, not educate. If you are worried about the message, that is your opportunity to discuss those issues with your child.

Some people are way too sensitive. This show is tame compared to real life. If you want to find something to be outraged about, watch the news.

If you don't like it, don't watch it. It is just a simple as that. Now let's discuss issues that really matter.

Why read and comment on something you don't care about then?

What made you think I don't care?

I love this show. Think of how many critics "All in the Family" had when it started. "Friends" also had its critics and started slowly.

STEROTYPES ARE based on fact. NOT ALL but most. Not ALL "girly" men are gay, but most most men who ARE girly ARE gay. not ALL Columbian women talk like that but MOST do. The problem isnt the network, its us as a society. AGAIN it is EASIER to put people in a category that has been researched by other people than INDIVIDUALLY judge to the core and find the TRUE person. ITS the CLIFF NOTES way of getting to know people. WE ARE LAZY AS A SOCIETY.

LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE and realize that the good usually suffers with the bad. Not ALL mean cheat, but MOST DO.

Don't watch, don't care. The gay stuff is one reason. I don't hate anybody, I'm sure not afraid of anybody. I'm just #$%$agnositic. The constitution guarantees pursuit of happiness and if that gay stuff makes people happy, let 'em. I just don't want it shoved in my face on a situation comedy that is supposed to entertain me. I'll take the real family sitcoms from Disney and Nickelodeon any day over somebody preaching political correctness at me.

I hate to break it to you Bruce but gay people do exist and showing that FACT, isn't shoving it your face anymore more than they are shoving (2) hetero couples in your face. Clearly you are the one with the problem and despite your claims, you are sadly full of hate.
      • MatthewS 3 mths ago
Bruce, I'm fine with that. I'll admit, I don't watch Tyler Perry's House of Pain or whatever it's called, and I don't think that makes me racist. I just don't relate to the shows. If you don't see your family in Modern Family, then I think it's fine that you don't watch it.

        You get my vote Bruce.

I don't think any of the characters are INCREDIBLy multidimensional, and they pretty much ALL make fun of stereotypes. If you think Cam and Mitchell aren't represented as stereotypes often for comic effect, you're fooling yourself. So is Phil when he's the thinks-he's-cool dad or Haley as the brainless teen. Comedies often play on stereotypes for laughs, taking something that is true about a stereotype and taking it that step into absurd that makes us laugh at ourselves.

Another worthless show from ABC. They only have one show worth watching and NBC is only one step behind.

Modern Family is the best show on TV now. It always ends with a message for the family.

Modern family is a disgrace. Its what is wrong about our society. I am so sick of Hollywood with their gay promotion, liberal secular agenda. Homosexuality is still a sin, dropping the f-word, childish vugalrity is just more crap to add to our polluted environment! Hope the show goes off the air in a year!
