All 50 States See Record Highs in July

No state in the union was safe from July's blistering heat wave, according to data from the U.S. National Climatic Data Center.

The horrible July heat wave, lasting weeks in some cities, the entire month in others, affected nearly 200 million people in the United States at some point. Preliminary data show that 2,712 high-temperature records were either tied or broken in July, compared with 1,444 last year, according to the NCDC. At least one weather station in all 50 states set or tied a daily high temperature record at some point during July.

Two weather stations tied for the hottest temperature recorded during July. The Blythe station in Riverside County, Calif., and the Gila Bend station in Maricopa County, Ariz., both hit 120 degrees Fahrenheit (48.9 degrees Celsius) in July.

Even Alaska recorded unusually sweaty temperatures. The temperature at the Northway weather station in Southeast Fairbanks County hit a record 97 F (36.1 C) on July 11.

    Newark, N.J., set an all-time high at 108 F (42.2 C) on July 22, breaking the record of 105 F (40.6 C), set in 2001.

In Washington, D.C., Dulles International Airport saw its hottest July on record this year and recorded its highest July temperature of all time at 105 F (40.6 C), on July 22. That same day, water in the nearby Potomac River was the hottest ever recorded at 96 F (35.4 C) (records go back to only 1988), reported the Capital Weather Gang blog.

The city of Morehead, Minn., had the dubious distinction as the hottest place on Earth for a day, said meteorologist Heidi Cullen of Climate Central, in an interview on National Public Radio. On July 19, the heat index there — a measure of humidity and temperature that indicates how hot the weather feels — was 134 F (56.7 C). (The National Weather Service later said this reading could be an anomaly due to the local weather station's location in a very wet field, and not representative of the entire town.)

The creeks and ponds here in Texas are so low the cafish are gettin' fleas, and the other fish are having to learn to walk! (It was like this in '98- when it finally did rain half the fish drowned- they'd forgotten how to swim!)..

yup.... no Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Wyoming...

I just searched for California on its own... it came up as:
CA Monthly Highest Max Temperature Records set in July 2011
        Out of a possible 184,088 records: 0 (Broken) + 0 (Tied) = 0 Total

I want to know how hot it has been in Illinois. It has been really humid, dry, and hot everywhere. I think we need some global cooling.
      • Robert 9 mths ago
Extremely hot here in Illinois this year. Supposed to be 97 today. :(

Illinois sucks this time of year! My town didn't have any record highs, but the heat index has destroyed my yard.

exactly WHERE in Washington State was there RECORD HEAT???? We haven't had a summer this year!
      • Profound Gaming 9 mths ago
        -_- It said D.C...
      • jaded 9 mths ago
um, hello.... D.C. is not a state. Washington STATE is a state. And we have not had any breaking record heat. We had a breaking record low, however.

Headline: "All 50 STATES See Record Highs in July"
    • Drew  •  9 mths ago
This is a joke, there wasn't record heat in all 50 states... We've barely had sun in Oregon

Oregon has been rather cool this summer! Where and when did we have record heat?? How'd I miss it?? :-) We still are part of the 50 U.S. states but somehow we missed all that heat (and so glad I live here and not somewhere in the South or Midwest!!)
    • beebo  •  9 mths ago
I live in California and it's been really great this summer. There have only been a handful of hot days, otherwise it's been very pleasant
    • PlutoIsAPlanet  •  9 mths ago
When it gets so hot like this I find the best thing to do is go around to one of my neighbors that has a pool. I'd rather not warn them, so I just go over there wearing my swim trunks and sandals and carrying a towel and a portable radio. I knock on the door and then commence to make some small talk during which I make sure to drop in a few phrases like "It sure is a scorcher today", or "Can you believe this heat?" or "C'mon buddy, how about letting me swim in that pool of yours?" And that technique seems to work pretty good. Although when it doesn't, it's important to note that the cops never seem to see my side and the ride home in the patrol car can get a little uncomfortable. The other thing you can try is to go down to the basement and lay on the floor. That's what our dog does. But he doesn't much like it when I try to take his spot, which is the best spot. He's pretty much on to me now and will chase me back up the stairs when he sees me coming.

"All 50 states...." please. Here in California, it's been exceptionally cool this summer. I've heard the same for Oregon and Washington. So the West coast isn't part of the United States anymore? Where did the extra three states come from?
    • Yvonne  •  9 mths ago
Huh? I'd like to know where the record-breaking high was in WA. Up until the last weekend in July, University of Washington in Seattle recorded a total of 78 minutes over 80 degrees. I doube we've had more than 6 or 8 cloudless days so far.
    • SurferDude12  •  9 mths ago
California hasn't been that hot this summer. It's been cool.

I live in Seattle and there is no way in Hell we tied or broke the daily record for High in July. This has been one of the coldest and wettest July in History in Seattle.
    • Tuscaneer  •  9 mths ago
Didn't yahoo report just a few days ago that NASA data from the Terra satellite shows that
the atmosphere begins to shed excess heat three months sooner, as a warming period builds up, than the climate models assume? Yes, it did. And that once the atmosphere begins shedding excess heat, it sheds it at a much faster rate than that assumed by the climate change models. And that this may explain the admitted *discrepancy* that exists between the climate change predictions and . . . oh, what shall we call it? Reality? Yes, to all.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
No, you have that wrong, only part of Washington state was warm, we live in the Seattle area, and trust me it's been the coldest wettest "summer" in years. This weekend it finally arrived (summer) We're hoping it stays a few days!
