50-strong brawl turns to melee at Mall of America

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — Officials says a moving melee involving scores of juveniles at the Mall of America took police and security officers over an hour to control as shoppers packed the sprawling shopping center the day after Christmas.

Mall spokeswoman Bridget Jewell says about 50 young people were involved in a fight at a food court Monday afternoon and that dozens of them then swarmed through the Minnesota mall as bystanders ran into stores to get out of the way.

Fifteen-year-old Makenzie Shofner tells the Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/vTaYKd ) that some of the mob grabbed items from shoppers and kiosks.

Police brought the melee under control after about an hour.

Mall officials say they did not lock down the mall, that no weapons were involved and no serious injuries were reported in the disturbance.

The fight was a scam, just for looting, I've had a guy slam into my shopping cart one time and get loud to distract, first thing I did was put myself between them and my wife with her purse. Too much of this crap going on and people don't realize it till it's too late.

If my child (now grown) had done something like this, he would have begged the police to take him into protective custody. No judge would have punished him more than me! Parents, discipline your children. Seriously, it is an act of love! btw... I typed discipline; not abuse.

This is why the once prosperous Bannister Mall in Kansas City has been bulldozed. It was no longer safe to go shopping there when punks like these made it their turf. Political correctness won't keep the stores open, a justice system that punishes antisocial behavior will.
      • Erik 4 mths ago
get them BEFORE the justice system does... thugs with shattered kneecaps and crushed skulls won't be likely to engage in this behavior a second time.

This is when us adults, all the adults in that mall...(remember us...the people who kids once respected)..need to grab one kid each and hold them for the police without fear of the little brat pressing charges. If we tried this when I was their age, we would have been slapped silly by the adults in the mall. Our society has become pathetic, the fact that we let this #$%$ happen is sad! The kids know they can do whatever they want because if an adult inteferes they can sue them...with support from their assenine parents. If we vandalized someones house or misbehaved disrespectfully to one of our neighbors on the block, they would take us by the arm and bring us to our house and tell our paretns what we did or said, then my dads size 12 would land on my #$%$..then I never did whatever it was again! Now, no one knows anyone on their block anymore because everyone is inside plugged into a comp or reality TV! ...ok ok, I am plugged in right now, but I don't have cable or watch TV. :)

    • James  •  4 mths ago
They should have locked down the mall, and arrested every one of the little brats, and let their parents come down to the station to pick them up!

This is what happens when you can't 'touch' a kid....When I was a kid we were always under threat of being physically punished...You touch a kid today and you go to jail.....Our legal system has turned us into pansies.

When people act in a way that supports the negative stereotype that others may have of them, they don't do themselves any favors. Then they wonder why people continue to hold the stereotype and feel unfairly victimized by it. Go figure.
