6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Offshore Near Fukushima

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake has hit offshore of the northern coast of Japan near Fukushima, where a 2011earthquake and tsunami devastated the region, the Associated Press reported.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said the quake hit early Saturday morning six miles underneath the sea surface and they have issued a tsunami warning for the region.

Local news agencies report that engineers are checking the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, which was seriously damaged in the last disaster.

Approximately 19,000 were killed in 2011 and there are still an estimated 100,000 residents unable to return to the region due to fear of radiation poisoning.
