6 dead as storms, possible tornadoes hit Southeast

ROCK HILL, South Carolina (AP) — At least five people have been killed and dozens injured as a storm system that spawned several possible tornadoes moved across the U.S. Southeast.

Suspected tornadoes were reported Wednesday in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina. Dozens of homes and buildings were damaged, and thousands of people were without power as trees and power lines were downed.

In South Carolina, three people were killed and five injured when a likely tornado swept through a rural community near Rock Hill, just south of Charlotte, North Carolina. In north Georgia, a man was killed when a tree fell on his sport utility vehicle.

Officials said Thursday that an adult and a child were killed in central North Carolina during the storms.

In eastern Alabama, a suspected tornado splintered trees and demolished mobile homes at a pair of housing parks near the Auburn University campus.

It was the worst bout of weather for the state since about 250 people were killed during the tornado outbreak in April.

In Rock Hill, Simone Moore told The Herald newspaper she was sitting on her back porch when she saw the tornado touch down and then quickly move back up. She said she noticed a nearby trailer had vanished.

"Everything's gone," Moore said. "Even the cows in the pasture."

Trees fell on homes in southeastern Mississippi, and mobile homes were tossed off their foundations. In all, 15 people were hurt.

At least 10 people were injured when a possible tornado ripped through North Carolina, leaving thousands without electricity.

Forecasters said a cold front stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Northeast was to blame. Temperatures dropped in some areas from the low 70s to the 50s as the front passed, and winds gusted to near 30 mph.

It's easy to make wise cracks about tornadoes if you've never lived through one.
If you have, then you'd know how terrifying it is!

I understand your anxiety. I've been in two tornadoes, but I am still fascinated by them.

'Preciate it MLB! I, too, have survived 4 tornadoes and 5 hurricanes and it is nothing short of miraculous that anybody survives these storms. The only way I can describe it is that it sounds like a 1000 screaming demons... so we know what Hell must be like! And I'm just grateful to still be here telling you this!

Why is it every time there's an article on a disaster anywhere on Earth there is a parade on morons saying "They deserved it?"
      • chickadee 6 mths ago
Because they can't hold their poison.
Those who feed hate within them, get eaten by it.
It seeps out at every opportunity, but never stops because each expression of it causes it to grow, needing more and more places to live.
You can tell who they are, they follow one another, give each other thumbs up for ugly, validate that they're not alone because others feel the same way.
        But they are alone.
Disconnected from themselves and others by choosing to ignore simple human compassion.

because my republican bible creedo tells me so.....we are all responsible for our own free will and what happens to us is a result of our poor choices and gods will.

I live in Iowa - if it looks, acts, sounds like a tornado then it IS a tornado!! What on earth is a "likely" tornado??

In Texas, they're saying it's just funnel clouds because according to the National Weather Service most of them never reached the ground completely.

There is another wind driven anomoly callet a microburst that produces results very siminlar to that of a tornado. It's a straight line wind that produces winds of up 175 miles an hour, can last for several seconds and can caust similar destruction Living in Mississippi. we,re used to both and we also have to contend with a tornados big bother, the hurricane.

I know people who now live in tornado-fearing states, that are from places that tornadoes are a rare-form...They think tornadoes are "cool", and don't take it seriously when there are warnings!! I wish they would wake up and realize that tornadoes are one of the most dangerous natural disasters possible!!!

the scary part is that basements and shelters are not among most of the South's largest alternative of protection-,but should be!-the homeowners just keep on building these poorly built homes on cement pads and then when these Tornado'#$%$ their areas-they all go berserk! PLEASE find alternatives to protect ones self from the destructive twisters!--and prevent all the funerals.

Just to mention: They can build storm rooms inside their homes now. Very strong and can double as a panic room. Sure would beat hiding in a closet or the tub.

why does everything have to be political? For heavens sakes people this was a tragedy. November is a time for giving thanks for what we have not making political smears at those who have lost what is precious to them. I wish them all the best

Some of these comments really #$%$ me off. Unlike a hurricane, tornadoes are very unpredictable as to where they will strike. So shut up with your "this is what happens when you live in the south" comments, and your "die hillbilly die" comments. Besides we prefer redneck more than hillbilly. Rednecks are educated, unlike some of the people who post the hateful comments.

Tragedy can strike anyone at anytime, regardless, of race, creed, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, political affiliation. It is disheartening to read the sickening and insensitive comments some people place on here. I would be ashamed to call myself human. A dog would have more decency and compassion for mankind.

For the record and directed to all of you making nasty comments. The south is a very nice place to live. We don't have the smog or trash that some states have. And, for the record, there are "rednecks" and "hillbillies" everywhere!!!! I'm a Yankee transplant who now lives in South Carolina and I'd rather be here than in my hometown! Why don't you focus on what's more important, like the 3 people who lost their lives in the tornado in Rock Hill, SC. That's only a little over 1/2 hour from where I live. My prayers go out to all the families who won't have their loved ones around anymore. And you might want to give thanks next week that you're still here!!!!!!

This is a tragedy, like all tornado's are. Mother nature shows no mercy. I do believe the ever changing climate is making the storms come more often now. People in mobile homes are at the most risk. My heart goes out to all those affected.

ive never been in a tornado, but i can imagine how horrifying those can be, if you are trapped in one. a whole bunch of trees and pieces of house flying all around you... all that wind, and lightning and thunder and rain. i couldnt do it. i'd be crying and praying the whole time. thoughts and prayers goes out to those who lost there house, family, and there belongings in that disaster.
