    Tsunami Warning Lifted for Hawaii After Philippines Earthquake

    Update (11:56 a.m. EDT): All the tsunami warnings have been lifted, the Associated Press reports, but not before a one-inch tsunami wave hit the Philippines east coast. Unfortunately not everyone escaped this quake unscathed. One person was killed when her house collapsed in Cagayan de Oro city, on the island of Mindanao.

    Update (9:42 a.m. EDT): The tsunami watch has been canceled for Hawaii after the earthquake magnitude was reduced to 7.6. A banner on Reuters says the tsunami watch has also been lifted for Japan and Taiwan, but remains in place for Indonesia and the Philippines.

    Original: A strong earthquake that hit off the east coast of the Philippines Friday sparked tsunami warnings for much of the Pacific, including Hawaii. So far, we haven't gotten reports of damage or injury, but the strength of the quake and the widespread tsunami warning suggest this is one to watch. The United States Geological Survey put the preliminary magnitude at 7.9, reporting that the quake hit about 91 miles east of the Philippines. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for the entire region, including Hawaii, where the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports a wave, if it's coming, would hit at 12:28 p.m. local time. Below is a map of the quake's location, per USGS.
