7 dead in attack in troubled NW China

BEIJING (AP) — Two knife-wielding men hijacked a truck in China's restive northwest, then rammed the vehicle into a crowd and got out to attack the pedestrians, sparking clashes that killed seven people and injured 22, a police official said Sunday.

The attack happened in the Silk Road city of Kashgar in northwest Xinjiang, a region rocked by ethnic violence in recent years.

The attackers' identities and motive were unclear, but an overseas activist group said it worried Chinese authorities might crack down on minority Uighurs blamed for previous violence in the region.

State-run Xinhua News Agency reported that two blasts were heard about an hour before the incident Saturday night — one from a minivan and the other from the food stall-lined street where the hijacking took place. The police official, from the information office of the Xinjiang regional public security bureau, said she could not confirm whether there were explosions.

According to the official, two men hijacked a truck and stabbed the driver to death. The men then drove the truck into a crowd, got out of the vehicle and attacked people along the road with a knife or knives, said the official, who refused to give her name, as is common with Chinese officials.

People who came under attack retaliated, and one of the suspects was killed and the other caught, the official said.

A total of seven people died and 22 were injured, she said. Xinhua said six "innocent people" and one suspect were killed.

The official said the case was under investigation and that the motive was unclear.

Xinjiang has been beset by ethnic conflict and a sometimes-violent separatist movement by Uighurs, a largely Muslim ethnic group that sees Xinjiang as its homeland. Many Uighurs say they have been marginalized as more and more majority Han Chinese move into the region.

An overseas Uighur advocacy group said that according to information received from Uighurs in Kashgar, most of Saturday's dead and injured were members of a security force that helps the police maintain order.

"I am worried that authorities may detain more Uighurs by making use of this incident," Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Germany-based World Uyghur Congress, said in an email to The Associated Press.

It is the second fatal incident in Xinjiang in less than two weeks. On July 18, police shot 14 rioters who attacked a police station and killed four people in Hotan city, 300 miles (500 kilometers) southeast of Kashgar, Xinhua said.

In 2009, nearly 200 people in the region were killed in fighting between Uighurs and Han Chinese.

Xinjiang is notorious for harboring Muslim extremists. If Muslims carry out attacks in US, it is called terrorist attack. If they do the same in China, it is called ethnic conflict. What a double standard.

We have freedom of religion. China does not. Big difference.
      • EricY 9 mths ago
@eric if we americans have freedom of religion than tell me whats so free about the muslim religion. Americans fear muslims and stereotype them as terrorists. Do not differ China and America because of the freedom of religion. If you know history, China does not quell religion and actually does not mind it as long as it does not impede on government ruling...just like how the US Constitution is upheld. Muslim and all religions are dangerous to society, but it is those who use religion as a license to kill are the real dangers...not countries.

"We have freedom of religion. China does not. Big difference." What a hypocritical claim by Eric.

I heard about the train wrecks in China. Maybe that's why the commercial in the US that promotes China as having the fastest trains doesn't play anymore.
They had to slow them down a bit until safety issues are worked out.

Chinese Muslims can easily assimilate into the masses since THEY ARE CHINESE !!!!

So why can't Dutch assimilate with Germans since they're Arian?

      SEE!!! GUN CONTROL WORKS!!!! (sarcasm)
      • Brock O. Bama 9 mths ago
while it's true that knives can only be used at close range, the average gun crime takes place at less than 10 feet... a gun is a tool it is neither good nor bad, and it can be an equalizer for less physically powerful people, such as women or the elderly, to fend off attackers of any size... in the USA, states with "shall issue" concealed carry policies have drastically lower crime rates than states with very strict gun laws.. violent crime rates have dropped every year for the last 30 or so years as more law abiding, good people than ever own and carry guns... "An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life" -Robert A. Heinlein

I was going to write something along the lines of this must be lies, ask gun control advocates, violence only takes place because guns are available so this couldn't have possibly happened. But you put it so much more simpler ;)
      • rabbit 9 mths ago
Not agreeing or disagreeing, but it makes one wonder how many fatalities there would have been had the attackers had guns instead of knives.

The Chinese Authorities MUST understand that there are some PARTNERSHIP that is IMPOSSIBLE to work. The HAN/UIGHUR peaceful coexistance must be considered as such partnership. The example is seen all over the world from INDIA/PAKISTAN,SUDAN,CONGO,FORMER USSR etc.I guess the HAN will be happier without the Uirghurs and vice versa. Why go into a business that will never bring any reasonable profit? This violence and killings will continue and unfortunatelly even bringing in 1million China military personel will hardly stop it.

chinese muslims are crazy too !
    • rabbit  •  9 mths ago
An overseas activist group? You mean the United States? It wouldn't surprise me. Americans are notorious for wanting to mind everyone else's business. Let China deal with their problems as they see fit. Had we learned to mind our own business years ago, our country wouldn't be in the sorry mess it's in now.
    • Cutie Pootie  •  9 mths ago
      Definitely Muslims. Surprise, surprise!

    • Dougie Boy  •  9 mths ago
China will crack down hard on these Muslims, we should be too. But we can't even crack down on the illegals after spending billions of taxpayer dollars. And they want more dollars to waste
    • A Yahoo! User  •  9 mths ago
at least China is combatting terrorist by excuting them...here, we keep them alive in Cuba with taxpayers money...no wonder, we're in debt

And all we hear from our state run media propaganda machine, is how bad Jews and Christians are.
    • JimmyT  •  9 mths ago

    • Anon  •  9 mths ago
one thing these chinese know how to do is deal with those pesky muzzies. to that, i give them respect. sharia law is contradictory to any rational human thought, its not even funny.
    • Duke Louis  •  9 mths ago
i love the, we should crack down on the muslims, we can't crack an egg,,were broke
    • Anonymous  •  9 mths ago
For this matter, I support China! The Muzzies already ruined Europe and are working at populating the US and turning it in to a 3rd world country like Pakistan. I hope China won't put up with this and will stand their ground, rather than try and be politically correct.
