    7 UW college students injured in Calif. van crash

    BRADLEY, Calif. (AP) — The California Highway Patrol says two vans carrying 22 University of Washington students to a conference collided on a central coast highway Friday, injuring seven students, including two who were hurt when they were ejected from one of the vans.

    Officer Joel Newby says the vans were driving south, side by side, on U.S. 101 near Bradley in Monterey County when they crashed into each other around 12:30 p.m.

    The collision sent one van into the center divide, where it rolled. Two students were ejected through a broken window. The patrol initially said the two students were seriously injured but later described their injuries as moderate.

    The two were taken by helicopter to trauma centers. Two other students with moderate injuries were taken by ambulance to local hospitals.

    The patrol says the remaining injured students suffered minor injuries that didn't require medical treatment.

    The students were on their way to a conference in Santa Maria.

      And why were they on the 101 that far north? Someone didn't do a good job planning that trip.

        Huh? Do you even know California? Santa Maria is south of SF and north of LA. If they were driving from UW to get to Santa Maria, they would've had to take the 101.

        Gee Sage having grown up in California I would never take 101 south to get to Santa Maria. I would take I-5 south until Kettleman City then cut over and arrive on 101 about 30 miles north of Santa Maria. I would not have been on 101 that far north. Look at a map sometime yourself and see that I-5 south would have been a safer route to have taken.

      Maybe they wanted to stop in Santa Cruz ? Monterey Peninsula ? The best trips are not just Point A to Point B .
