75-year-old pilot explains encounter with F-16s

CHICAGO (AP) — Myrtle Rose was taking a short flight over suburban Chicago when the 75-year-old aviation enthusiast looked out her cockpit window to see two F-16 fighter jets. She assumed the military pilots were just slowing down to get a closer look at her antique plane.

It wasn't until she landed her 1941 Piper J-3 Cub that friends and the police told her the attention was much more serious — for straying into restricted airspace during a visit by President Barack Obama.

Rose, who tries to fly every day when weather permits, said she had been itching to get back in the air Wednesday after a number of days on the ground. She normally uses her computer to check for airspace restrictions, but it wasn't working properly.

"I hadn't flown in over a week," she said. "It was a beautiful afternoon." After some guests departed her home, she "just climbed in the airplane and left."

To make matters worse, she said, "I didn't have my radio on. I was just flying around."

On any other day, the brief flight would never have attracted notice. But Obama was in Chicago for a fundraiser marking his 50th birthday.

"There's really no excuse for not knowing," said Lt. Col. Mike Humphreys, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, which scrambled the two warplanes, a proposition that costs $9,000 an hour for each jet. "Anyone who flies an aircraft should know the restrictions."

Rose said she was about 30 miles from O'Hare Airport when her plane was intercepted. As the fighters appeared, she wasn't alarmed.

"I thought, 'Oh, well, they're just looking at how cute the Cub is," she said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. The blue-and-yellow plane had won a best-in-class award at the Oshkosh Air Show, a huge annual gathering in Wisconsin.

Another NORAD representative suggested Rose had no business thinking that a military jet racing toward her would be in any way related to the cuteness of her plane.

"The biggest thing to keep in mind is that when F-16s come screaming up to you, they are probably trying to tell you something," spokeswoman Stacey Knott said.

Rose, who has been flying since the mid-1960s and even performed as a wing walker until five or six years ago, said the jet pilots could not have been more considerate.

Though she never saw their faces — hard to do, she said, since she was puttering along at about 60 mph and the jets were doing what she figured was about 300 mph — she was impressed with the way the pilot who pulled in front of her kept his distance to avoid rattling her wood-and-fabric plane.

"He was very respectful," she said.

Rose returned to land on the grass airstrip at her home in the affluent South Barrington area. Her late husband owned Rose Packing Co., a meat packer that supplies Canadian bacon to McDonald's restaurants.

Once she was on the ground, some friends rushed over and told her that the rendezvous had nothing to do with the good looks of the plane named Winston. After the aircraft was in the hangar, her yard began filling with police cars.

Rose said she filled out a report with the Federal Aviation Administration, including a note describing how she mistakenly believed the jets were circling to admire her plane. She said she has not heard from the agency.

FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said the investigation would probably take several weeks. Penalties could include a fine or a suspension of her pilot's license, or the agency might not take any action at all.

Rose, a Republican who said she did not vote for Obama, joked about mailing the president a note for his birthday.

"Oh, dear, maybe I should send him a belated birthday card and say, 'You should have stayed home and Michelle baked you a birthday cake.'"

Rose said she does have a bone to pick with NORAD, or whoever released the information about her close encounter with the jets.

"The worst part is they put my age in there," she said. "I don't think that was nice."

J-3 Cubs are, and always will be, a fun airplane to fly.

I never would have believed it but . . . I saw a Cub take off in a strong headwind one time. As she became airborne, the pilot throttled back and actually flew the plane backwards until once again at the beginning of the runway (final). He then throttled back up to land the plane. We laughed for an hour.

"FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said the investigation would probably take several weeks."

Yeah, this appears to demand a very complicated and in-depth investigation by our wonderful bureaucracy. It is obviously something that warrants an investigation of SEVERAL WEEKS!

If they would read this article they could have their "investigation" over in a few minutes. What's to investigate? A 75 year old lady went out flying on a nice afternoon in her antique Piper Cub. Damn, is there no one with any common sense left in the government?
      • we're screwed 9 mths ago
No. There isnt a lick of common sense in government at any level anymore.

they will have to have a congressional hearing and wait on Obummer & Holder to have further hearings, and maybe before Obummer is out of the white house
they will come to some conclusion.

      9,000 dollars an hour?
Well how much does it cost for Obama to fly on Air Force 1 when he flies to Chicago?
Is he there to raise money or to help America?
Who pays for this little trip?
      Ya shut up Liberal PIGS!
      • Joyfulsong 9 mths ago
No more than it cost Bush to fly to Camp David or his Ranch in Texas, which he did all the time you idiot
      • Friendly Fire 42 9 mths ago
        WRONG "IDIOT"!!!
Although Bush did fly frequently as well, he used only one plane. OBUMMER uses three and five times more security so; "HE DOES SPEND TEN TIMES MORE PER TRIP THAN ANY OTHER PREZZZZ!!!"
      • Joyfulsong 9 mths ago
Presidential policy by the Secret Service is set by the Secret Service not the president. He uses the same number of planes as any other president.

The FAA will probably suspend this great ladies license.Give the lady a break.A 75 year old in a 65 h.p.J3 Cub could only threaten A.F.1 while it is on the ground.Bet the F16 drivers got a good laugh as they flew by at stall speed trying to get a look at this threat.
      • va_tazdad 9 mths ago
She was never a threat to AF1. try reading the article. The space she violated was Obama's residence.

Where was this level of response on 9/11/2001?

Oh, that's right. It was told to "stand down"

So I've been flying for a while now, and I'd like to share a few things in response to what I've been reading here in the comments.

She should have been checking the NOTAMs prior to her departure, like every pilot does. No, it's not required to have a radio in an aircraft, especially not one as old as hers. And it doesn't matter how close to O'Hare airport she is, if she's flying under the Class B airspace attached to it. The only things she did wrong was not checking that there is a Temporary Flight Restriction set up around the President in her area, and not immediately understanding why two F-16s were intercepting her. Everything else checks out. She's a small, General Aviation pilot who routinely flies with next to no instrumentation/comms, and operates in most likely Class G uncontrolled airspace.

Next time you get intercepted by F-16s, it's kinda like having the police pull up alongside you with the lights on. Pull over.

As for Colonel NORAD guy, I'd rather pay the 9k/hr for those F-16 pilots to have a little fun flying around, than the MILLIONS we probably spent for the Fundraiser-in-Chief to have his birthday fundraiser. Which brings up an interesting question. Why did Yahoo! feel the need to include she's a Republican? Does that make any difference???
    • moldcrew  •  9 mths ago
don't we have bigger problems to deal with???
    • ploteous  •  9 mths ago
Myrtle, I know exactly what you did, the idiots that made these comments that have no clue about what flying a cub is will never understand you, there are so many rules that you can walk out your door and unknowingly break one of them,,
I also have a 41 cub and many times just head out to the patch and get in the air,
keep it up myrtle it obviously keeps you young,,,,,,,,to hell with all the bean counters. Don't let this dampen your spirit .

Don't begrudge Rose a $9,000.00 plane ride. Our government bailed out the banks two years ago at a tune of over 8 billion dollars. At least Rose got a thrill off of our tax dollars. It is more than we got two years ago.

I'm stymied over the relevance of this lady's political affiliations. What does her being a Republican have to do with this?
    • The best Is Yet to Come  •  9 mths ago
I do admire that this woman is 75 and can fly a plane . Most likely she will get a bill from the govt for 18 grand for those jets . Somehow i don't see them saying "oh forget about it " With the publicity she will probably keep her license as she has already told the media

It's thoroughly depressing to think that our military should be protecting this America hating socialist #$%$ O-bow-ma!!!

"Weeks to investigate" what exactly? Maybe we have a clue here to WASTE in Gov. spending!
    • Timothy R  •  9 mths ago
Surprised that they didn't send a swat team.
    • JDK  •  9 mths ago
People do your homework. This plane is considered either an Ultra-light, experimental and lightweight aircraft. NONE OF THE STANDARD FAA REGULATIONS APPLY!! ASK ME HOW I KNOW
Depending on the weight of the plane (with her in it), max speed, max fuel. She isnt required to have a radio, shes not required to check for restricted air space and she doesnt even have to have a pilots license, nor submit a course heading.
The fact that she brought that plane down into her own yard tells me this aircraft is exempt and as I have described above.

That explains the 2300 TSA boneheads running arount Barrington yelling hut, hut, hut....
Rose - thanks for the uplift - we needed it.
