Sept. 11, 2011 marks the tenth anniversary of the World Trade Center attack. The tragedy is being commemmorated at events in Minneapolis, including large service projects.
* The 9/11 Day of Service will be observed on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m., at the Victory Memorial Flagpole at the intersection of Victory Memorial Drive and 45th Avenue North. Rebuilding Together Twin Cities and HandsOn Twin Cities are going to repair 30 homes in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and volunteers are encouraged to bring nonperishable food and children's books to be given to the home repair projects' beneficiaries.
* After the introductory remarks at the 9/11 Day of Service, volunteers will be able to participate in projects like writing letters to United States soldiers overseas, and helping to create a "Freedom Banner" to symbolize "the importance of service and/or how 9/11 has impacted American lives." Attendance is free, but volunteers are encouraged to sign up online. Children and teenagers aged 6 to 17 can come if they are accompanied by an adult.
* The 9/11 Anniversary Event and Ceremony will be held on Sept. 11 from 12 to 4:30 p.m., at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The free event will include a "public safety display," which will feature firefighter and emergency responder equipment, and a solemn memorial ceremony beginning at 3 PM and lasting for the remainder of the event.
