Denver remembers the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in several profound ways. Jason Dahl, captain of United Flight 93 that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, was from Denver. There is a scholarship fund set up in his honor that has annual fundraisers in the area.
For the 10th anniversary there are prominent events for people in Denver to observe.
Colorado Remembers 9/11
The Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab (CELL) is hosting a concert featuring the Beach Boys and the Colorado Symphony at Civic Center Park. The event will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, and is free and open to the public. Gov. John Hickenlooper and Mayor Michael Hancock will be there to address the crowd. Honorees at the event include first responders and military personnel. Live music will be patriotic in nature. A military flyover will also occur during the event.
9/11 Remembrance Run
The fourth annual 9/11 Remembrance Run will happen starting at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 11 at Memorial Park in Arvada. Proceeds benefit Operation Restoration at Lost and Found Inc. A 20-mile timed marathon training run begins at 7 a.m. The 5K competitive run starts an hour later. The event also honors first responders and military personnel. There are several levels of sponsorships available.
9/11 Memorial Stair Climb
Perhaps the most unique event in the Denver area is the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb being held at Red Rocks Amphitheatre west of the city. Participants walk a total of nine counterclockwise laps around the amphitheater led by fire and rescue staff. The point is to simulate walking the height of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2011. Registration is $25 with the area opening at 7 a.m. The stair climb begins 9:02 a.m. following a moment of silence and the playing of "Amazing Grace." Afterward, there will be live music and refreshments.
