9/11 Anniversary Events in Los Angeles

Remembering Patriot Day, 2011, takes on a special significance with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. In the Los Angeles area, opportunities to reflect on the meaning of the day come in many shapes and sizes, including family activities at the Pasadena Museum of History and more solemn events at Pepperdine University.

    * Pasadena Museum of History. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. families are free at the museum which will have a hands on flag-making exercise, including an opportunity to create a clay flag pole for displaying the creation. Informative and historical displays will celebrate the role of first responders, including offering a photo opportunity on a vintage police car and hook and ladder truck.

    * Pepperdine University. Beginning at 11 a.m. local leaders and dignitaries, including the widow of a Pepperdine alumnus killed on United 93, will read the names of all 2,997 killed in the attacks, including the first responders. The university law will display flags in memory of each of the victims as well. A 1 p.m. screening of the film "United 93," will be held in the Elkins Auditorium and a 4 p.m. memorial service is planned.

    * Nixon Presidential Library, 18001 Yorba Linda Blvd., Yorba Linda. Events to commemorate the tragedy begin Monday and conclude on Patriot Day with remarks at 10:30 a.m. from Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and New York Fire Department Lieutenant Joe Torillo, who survived the collapse of both towers. A damaged aerial fire truck which responded to the attack on the Twin Towers and 16 tons of debris from the World Trade Center will be on display.

    * Beverly Hills 9/11 Memorial Garden, 445 North Rexford Drive in Beverly Hills on the North/West corner of Rexford and South Santa Monica Blvd. The memorial, on the fire department grounds, will be dedicated at 4 p.m. with a ceremony in front of the Beverly Hills Fire Department.

When I turned the radio on that morning, I heard Rich Capparella talk about missing United Airlines and United Airlines flights on KUSC radio. I watched TV in horror, as people were still fleeing smoke and debris from The World Trade Center in New York, as I was getting ready to go to work, and as reinactments of the planes striking the towers was being shown. I apprehensively drove to Caltech, where I worked as an Assistant to the Director of Accounting. Some people were already leaving the facilities on their way home, as I arrived at work, In fact, I would have been surprised had this not been the case. Caltech is associated with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and there was fear our facilities might be attacked. I cried all day long as I watched the unbelievable horror that was occuring before our eyes, on TV, and as I watched the continuing news coverage of the 9/11 events. It was so unbelievable that this could happen in our country. That night, I went to bed in Pasadena, California, wondering if bombs might drop on us!

Why was JFK closed at 5pm on 9/10? Why were we not told? Bless the families who lost their loved ones and then we lost more loved ones in Iraq & Afghanistan? Mr. Bush, alot of blood on your hands.

im still waiting for the U.S. to reopen the 9/11 case. Still hard to believe that those planes were hi-jacked,its sad that our own government sacrificed its own for war propaganda. Same with the pentagon, show the country the footage of an airplane hitting it.

Without seeing the pictures, I still remember the great smoke rising from the devastation & declare I saw images of what looked like the devil. Out of all that terror though, God is still in control--may God continue to bless America!

I can't believe ten years have past since 9/11. It went quickly. I still remember the day clearly as if it happened yesterday. My friend called me early in the morning to tell me the news...........our country was never the same.

      United we stand

We are all united with a heart of gold
Where history is written and yet untold
In our silent spirits, the dignity is never sold
To any shadows crawling from out in the cold.
The freedom held so dear we will never trade
We are guarding it and we are not afraid
We will grow flowers where the ground is bloody stained
As in time, all those who wish us harm will fade.

We are gentle and sincere to all mankind
And opened our homes to others that can’t find
The warmest pillow where they can rest their mind
And wake up in the morning to see this gorgeous land.
Times past show that we had and gone through fears,
From grandparents to newborns we shed a sea of tears
In wars and battles, for every last salute we made over the years,
Still, our heart is strong and full of hope the skies will clear.

Our heroes stand united with the ones we lost with pride
Their blood was shed and all the families have cried
Still, we never turn and we never hide
In truth we will prevail, as truthful we have tried.
We are the ones that always walk so tall,
Never back down from any duty call
For the peace and happiness of all,
We will march ahead and never fall.

We always welcome anyone with an embrace
As God embraces us with his kind face
And guides us on this road without a trace
Together hand in hand we will be in a better place.
The love and honor for this land,
We feel and many do not understand
How our souls are proud to follow your command
America we are, and united we stand.

Get over it?? Wow, don't know about that but I do know that my fellow Angelenos and I share the pain of those that lost loved ones in this senseless tragedy. We we're all New Yorkers that day and will never forget the days events. The best nation in the world !!

not much going on in L.A. for 9-11.... i guess new yorkers arent part of the swanky Ca. mindset. I guess they "got over it" like they were telling us in NY NJ and Ct to do a couple of weeks after the tragedy.
