    9/11 Anniversary Events in New York

    While the city's official ceremony at the World Trade Center site on the morning of Sept. 11, 2011, is open only to families of the 9/11 victims, many memorial events are open to the public:

    * Hand in Hand Remembrance

    On Saturday, Sept. 10, thousands of people will join hands to form a human chain along the waterfront in lower Manhattan. The event begins at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the World Trade Center on 9/11. Afterward, participants may post a message on the Wall of Remembrance at Battery Park. Participation in the hand-holding ceremony is free, but pre-registration is required. Sign up on the event's website. Organizers will contact you with information on your starting location.

    * Remembrance at Trinity Church

    On Sunday, Sept. 11, the historic Trinity Church, at Broadway and Wall Streets near the ground zero site, will ring the Bell of Hope at 8:46 a.m. In the afternoon, at 1:30 p.m., the church will ring the tower bells for an hour of remembrance. At 2:30 p.m., a special service will be held in remembrance of the 9/11 volunteers, first responders, and recovery workers. At 7:14 p.m., an interfaith ringing of the Bell of Hope will again honor the memory of those killed. Admission is free.

    * World Trade Center Memorial Floating Lantern Ceremony

    On the evening of Sept. 11, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Interfaith Center of New York will host a floating lantern ceremony on the south side of Pier 40 on the Hudson River. Participants will write loved one's names and messages of peace on paper lanterns and release them into the river. The ceremony includes interfaith prayer, meditation, and musical performances. Admission is free.

    * Opening of the National 9/11 Memorial

    The 9/11 Memorial, on the ground zero site, contains two giant waterfalls and two reflecting pools in the footprints of the twin towers, surrounded by the names of the people who died inscribed in bronze panels. The Memorial will be open to the public starting on Monday, Sept. 12. Admission is free, but advance reservations are required. You can reserve a pass on the 9/11 Memorial's website. Enter at the intersection of Albany and Greenwich streets.

    Public transportation is recommended for all events in lower Manhattan. The area is accessible by subway, bus, ferry, and PATH train.

        No we should stop slamming it down the throats of people we already have lost over 1500 US servicemen as a direct result of 9/11 and thousands of others defending our nation throughout history.

      This reply is to the person going by the name Plinkton! If I tell you that most Moslims were totally against terrible attack that had happened on such beautiful City, like New York City, you will probably never believe that. Why? Because your mind is already made up, that all Muslims are evil and horrible people! Those heartless terrorists who unleash their attack on New Yourk City, were amongst the most extremiest of all Muslim. Try not to judge all the muslims for what had happen on September 11, 2001. In fact most muslems rather hate the day that those #$%$ were born. It is your right to express your opinion. But try to seek and understand that not all Muslims are as bad as you think they are. But I do respect your opinion. We are living in a free society, and we must not be judge because we are expressing our opinion and our view.

      DO NOT in any way shape or form wish to see another attack on these shores.But if they do pull off something during the politician only event being held by King Bloomburgh it would serve him right if the response time was slow.especially when the teachers unions get everything they ask for and the King closes fire stations.

      What a bunch of braindead people we have become.... Just look to what length we go to look innocent. Our own false flag attack has turned us into 24/7 actors of the american dream that we destroyed ourselves!! We are doomed cause we lost the way that once led us out of tyranny, now we have become the tyrannt's and all the glitter and mourning won't change that. The world knows us for what we are!!

        Axel, I respect your insight but that logic is a bit too extreme as well.

        Also – you should think about how those who lost their families by those attacks would feel.

        Hey Axel, why don't you move? People mourn in many different ways, who are you to judge?

      Not enough room for first responders and clergy at the World Trade Center memorial? The same people that risked their lives to rescue and aid the fallen New Yorkers? What is the point at all of having a memorial at all then? I hope current and former New Yorkers remember this. I certainly will. Thanks Mayor Bloomberg, you've done us all dirt. And all for Political correctness.

      Every time I look at a Muslim, I feel enraged.
      • Odd Thomas 8 mths ago
        That's because you are an idiot.
      • S 8 mths ago
        Sheldon you took a bait. That is what exactly those extremists want you to feel. Wake up.

      Just like we do not forget those who died at Pearl Harbor, so too shall we not forget those innocent lives that were taken on 09/11/2001.

        You are entitled to your opinion, but to express it on this post is disgusting.! all of this propaganda for NOTHING? I pray you never have to feel the pain these families are feeling. I will leave you with this, have you ever literally had to run for your life? with an infant being covered from head to toe with dust? Not knowing to this day if what you and your child were covered with will become an illness you dont know what it is? You are a sad person who I feel sorry for. Just for saying what you did, I hope on that day you think at least one time of those families who lost loved ones. Stop blaming all that is wrong with this world on the media. you are falling into the "media propaganda" you posted on here, what do you think this qualifies as, dumbass!
