9-year-old NYC boy chokes in school cafeteria

NEW YORK (AP) — Family members and a witness say a New York City fourth grader choked on meatballs during lunch earlier this month while school cafeteria workers stood by. The boy later died.

The New York Post (http://nyp.st/td2pmw ) reported Saturday that 9-year-old Jonathan Jewth fell to the ground during lunch Dec. 5 at Public School 47 in the Bronx. He was unconscious before help arrived.

A parent at the school, Andrea Perez, told the newspaper she saw the boy choking but cafeteria workers did nothing. She said at one point they yelled at him to put his fingers down his throat.

"He was on the ground and not moving after a while," Perez said through a Spanish-speaking translator. "Nobody was paying attention and they didn't know how to give aid, nobody knew what to do."

She said she did not know how to resuscitate the boy so she called 911 and started screaming for help. Another parent tried to help the boy, the newspaper reported.

Jewth was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center. Jonathan's family told the newspaper he suffered brain damage and died Monday.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said his death was a tragedy. Education officials haven't responded to requests for comment about the family's and Perez's account.

      (a) no one speaks english (b) we are in a heightened state of sensitivity that no one touches anyone anymore for fear of being sued (c) basic common sense has been thrown out the window for "protocol'.. a child lost his life because we fail as a society to get involved anymore!!!!

This is just HORRIBLE!!! When I was a waitress my boss gave us a quick tutorial on how to administer the Heimlich Maneuver. I'm saddened that this isn't mandatory for teachers and cafeteria workers. that is NOT RIGHT!!!
    • Michaell357  •  Lima, United States  •  5 mths ago
OK, We have a PARENT watching the cafeteria worker do nothing as the boy lay on the ground Choking. At one point they even yelled at him to put his "finger down his throat". Why did the PARENT not do anything except stand there and watch a boy die? The heimlich menuver is not hard to do or learn. It is something EVERBODY should learn. The Parent needs to be blamed in this as much as the cafeteria workers do. If I saw someone choking I would give aid. I know I would because I have done it twice. I would be ASHAMED to tell the New Crew that I watched somebody do nothing and did not attempt to help myself.
      • Mr. K 5 mths ago
which would you do? Finger down the throat or hiemich? see the problem?
      • patty l 5 mths ago
well to clarify this. there were two parents there. they did try to help. one did call 911 and the other one tried to help, doing what, the story never clarified. That one parent was the reason 911 even arrived. But as the child fell, it was the cafeteria people that was immediately saw but did nothing. Its such a tragedy. And yes, only if they knew the heimlech manuever. Such a tragedy, for a child to die of something, which could have been turned around. I would have been postal, if my child had to die cause of idiots around him/her. tragedy. we should all learn this stuff. its very big deal...

NO you are wrong. No one should ever get involved in this sort of thing. No one should call 911 for another person. That is WAY over stepping bounderies! 911 is a personal call you make for yourself when you need a ride to the hospital for something and can't get one. You never put yourself in the middle of another person's situation, or you get arrested or sued. Only doctors know how to handle this situation, so are to leave it up to doctors. Sucks the kid died, but lessons learned to chew better and swalllow and not talk while eating. I have never called the police or hospital or firemen for anything and I never will unless I do so for myself of if SPECIFICALLY asked to do by someone I PERSONALLY know. It is illegal to call 911 unless it is an actual emerency and if the cops decide it wasn't a real one, they come and arrest you for it! NOT worth it. People can figure things out for themselves. When he realized he had trouble swallowing he should have asked for help or went to the school nurse.

Unbelievable! No one knew the Heimlich Maneuver? This is inexcusable!
      • Daniel 5 mths ago
even if someone did the chances of giving the victim broken ribs is there. and if bodily hard is a risk, of course people are going to stay away in order to prevent themselves from being sued. the scary thing is that most school employees are not certified in first aid and cpr.
      • Micheal 5 mths ago
you find the very fact that schools don't know what to do unbelievable ? a friend of mine had a seizure at school and staff and students just starred like it's the first time anyone saw it.
      • TMC 5 mths ago
Unfortunately...it is not referred to as the Heimlich Maneuver anymore. Try...chest compressions.

I saw a dog walking service for charpei dogs that the walkers know CPR to save
life of a dog? Red Cross teaches and gives certificate of CPR to teachers, janitors ,
bus drivers???very sad for the family that no one cared....even waiters need to
know if someones chokes on food.

It takes a couple of hours to learn CPR and How to help a choking person. It should be mandatory for teachers to know this and all adults. Doing something is better than doing nothing!
      • Alexandros 5 mths ago
In my school district it is mandatory for all certified personnel
      • A Yahoo! User 5 mths ago
You think so? Telling him to stick his fingers down his throat was the worst thing anyone could have done.....So doing nothing isn't always worse, without training someone can be seriously hurt or killed by someone not trained in CPR or Heimlich.
      • Juan 5 mths ago
Its takes 10 minutes to learn with half a brain

Once, when I was a teacher, I had to apply the Heimlich maneuver to a child that ended up shooting a piece of hamburger almost half the size of his hand!! When I informed the Principal, for the sake of possible insurance issues and to alert the child's parents of possible damage to his ribs, the Principal looked up from his new Apple computer "toy" and said: "Atta boy" and went back to the screen!!! I contacted the mother and informed her but she was more concerned as to if the boy asked for her first, since the parents were going through a divorce??!!!!! I filled out some paperwork to cover my butt, since the apathy level of this Polk County Florida school was so high and went about my way, thankful that my training when I was a police officer was such that my instinct to help others would always be constant in issues like this matter. Oh yea, a few years later I read that the Principal did everything but have another teacher canonized when he helped change a flat tire of an old woman!!!! Priorities, folks, priorities!!! I'd bet that the school where this child was a student wishes that their staff were trained in First Aid and other protection actions, as do the parents!!!
      • adarc 5 mths ago
Anytime you perform the Heimlich, you shoudl also call 911 and have the choking victim taken to the hospital to be checked out, both for their safety and yours.
      • I always know more than U 5 mths ago
I did what I had to do, and waaaaayyyyyy above and beyond what was required in pathetic Polk County Florida. Unfortunately the point of my story was lost on you in that NO ONE CARED BEYOND ME!!!
    • Bella Rose  •  Traverse City, United States  •  5 mths ago
That's totally messed up! Why in the hell would you just stand around while a child is choking to death?! I work in a school and I see children everyday.....if any of them were to choke, I would do my best to help them. This is a sad, sad story.

How is it that ANYONE who works at a school doesn't have first aid training?
    • abolishthefederalreserve. ...  •  5 mths ago
A parent at the school, Andrea Perez, said she called 911 then why didn't they instruct her to do something, like CPR?
    • Allan C  •  Oklahoma City, United States  •  5 mths ago
All persons working at schools, city jobs, state jobs, and private schools even restaurants should be required to have training in CPR, and Choking, they are the front line and a law should be passed that prevents suing a person that tries to save a life. In Oklahoma teachers many of whom know these skills and they do in the most part keep a eye on the children.
    • Desolation  •  Chesterfield, United States  •  5 mths ago
How can ANYONE be hired to work with children in ANY capacity without knowing CPR? This is a fault of the school system and they should be held accountable for this child's death.
    • Sco  •  Miami, United States  •  5 mths ago
Why didnt Andrea Perez do something? Duhhh she apparently witnessed it. She stood there and watched him die.
    • RED  •  Chicago, United States  •  5 mths ago
OK working at a school and not one person knew CPR? That's is just ridiculous. I was under the belief that working in an environment such as a school, that the staff was trained in CPR. I guess I was wrong. My condolsences goes out to the family of this young man. I am truly sorry for your loss.
    • Robert  •  Denver, United States  •  5 mths ago
Anybody that works in a school should be trained in First Aid and CPR as well as how to give the Heimlich Maneuver. School Nurses should know how to give an emergency tracheotomy and teachers should be certified as EMT-Basics or First Responders
      at the very least.
    • danielp  •  Olean, United States  •  5 mths ago
Sad that the boy died, and that no cafeteria people, or teachers, or school nurses came to his aid. Seems that if the cafeteria was monitored, and basic CPR was taught, perhaps a different outcome would have happened. No sight like hindsight, but these things can be easily rectified.

if those workers touched that child, they would be liable for anyting that happened....lawyers wanted these rules...now live with them
