A social network for your neighborhood

Think of it as Facebook for your neighborhood, sort of. Nextdoor is a private social network exclusively for the community you live in.

“The mission for Nextdoor is to bring back that sense of community when we knew our neighbors,” says the company's CEO Nirav Tolia

Nextdoor was founded in 2010 and helps residents communicate with one another on everything from finding a babysitter to helping each other after storms or floods.

“We now have over 900 partnerships with public agencies, primarily police departments, so that police and neighbors can work together in times of crisis,” Tolia says.

Nextdoor is a free service that anyone can join. Users need to verify their address to prove they live in the community they are joining.

“We started the company with the notion that privacy is very important,” Tolia says. “It’s not the type of service that’s about entertainment and gossip. It’s just not what Nextdoor is about.”

Nextdoor is currently in more than 60,000 neighborhoods and growing. The company is valued at over $1billion thanks to a recent round of funding. Tolia says he hopes to be in more than 50 percent of the neighborhoods in the U.S. by the end of the year.
