ABC Is Considering a Phantom of the Opera TV Series from Desperate Housewives' Marc Cherry

From Wisteria Lane to... the Great White Way... by way of television?

Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry is working on a modern re-imagining of Gaston Leroux's novel-turned-Broadway musical The Phantom of the Opera, TV Line reports.

ABC has ordered a pilot script for the potential series, which is set "in the sexy and cutthroat world of the modern-day music business." The project is not a musical, but will feature musical elements, much like ABC's country drama Nashville.

The script will be written by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner (Broadway's First Date), and Cherry and his producing partner Sabrina Wind will serve as executive producers.

The Phantom of the Opera was most recently adapted for the big screen in 2004.
