Abilene police say man killed by officers was wielding 'bladed weapon'

Abilene police shot and killed a man allegedly wielding a weapon Monday afternoon at United Supermarket on North Willis Street, according to an Abilene Police Department statement.

This is the second APD shooting in less than 10 days that resulted in death.

Around 2 p.m., police were called to the store where employees reported a man threatening employees and customers with a bladed weapon and demanding money from the register, according to allegations in a statement from Rick Tomlin, APD public information officer.

Eventually, the man left the store, allowing employees to lock the doors for safety and prevent the man from reentering.

Officers arrived and encountered the man, still holding the weapon, outside the store, according to allegations.

After he didn't comply with multiple commands from officers to surrender his weapon, an officer deployed a Taser, but it had no effect on him. Officers fired on the the man in the parking lot. He was pronounced dead by a justice of the peace.

The two officers involved are on paid administrative leave as per departmental policy, and Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.

A name for the man shot and killed has not been released, pending next-of-kin notification.

On April 30, Angela Jaques, 44, allegedly opened fire on police during a standoff. Police returned fire and killed her. An officer was placed on administrative leave, and the Texas Rangers are investigating.
