Abuse victim: church at top must ask forgiveness

ROME (AP) — An Irish woman raped as a teen by a priest said Friday some clergy sex abuse victims are questioning motives behind an upcoming Vatican-backed symposium, where she hopes the pope and other Catholic leaders will ask for forgiveness for those who failed to protect children.

Marie Collins told reporters at a news conference promoting the four-day symposium next week at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome for bishops and other Catholic leaders that it would be "wonderful" for survivors and for a wounded church if Benedict XVI publicly sought forgiveness for church leaders who put loyalty to their institution ahead of safety of children.

Some survivors have asked, "'Is it just a public relations exercise? Can we trust it as being a genuine change?'" Collins said, as she sat flanked by a top Vatican official on abuse, Monsignor Charles Scicluna. But she said that after wrestling with whether to accept the invitation to speak she decided that it was important for her "to speak and be heard" by church hierarchy.

The opening keynote speech on Monday at the start of the gathering aiming for "healing and renewal" will be delivered by Cardinal William Levada, a U.S. churchman who heads the Vatican's powerful Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith. That office, led for decades by Benedict XVI before he was elected pope in 2005, shapes and drives the Vatican's policy on handling cases of abuse as well as the widespread allegations that church hierarchy, including at the Holy See, systematically tried to hide abuse, including by shuffling clergy from parish to parish.

Among symposium participants will be Cardinal Sean Brady, the primate of Ireland's 4 million Catholics and who in 2010 admitted he helped to conceal the crimes of a serial rapist-priest from Irish authorities in the mid-1970s. He has rejected calls to resign.

Collins, who was repeatedly raped in 1960 by a hospital chaplain while aged 13 and hospitalized, was asked how healing could be achieved when many top officials have refused to take responsibility for cover-ups. Her attacker wasn't removed from the priesthood and imprisoned before 1997.

"The most healing thing that could possibly happen in the leadership of the church is to ask forgiveness" for this negligence, she replied. "There is a difference between apologizing and asking for forgiveness. We have had apologies."

In the Catholic church especially, "forgiveness is so important and I think if we were to be asked that by the church leadership, forgiveness for what has happened in the past ... not for the abusers, but for what happened and what was done by their superiors, I think that would be hugely healing," Collins said.

Asked if that request applied to the pope, Collins added: "Obviously, if the pope came out and asked forgiveness for the leadership that fell down on their responsibilities, putting their loyalty to the church, to their institution, before the safety of children that would be the most wonderful thing I think for survivors and for the faithful who have been hurt and lost trust and lost respect."

"I think apologies can be looked on as just words but asking for forgiveness is a much harder thing to do."

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that a letter from Cardinal Tarciso Bertone, the Holy See's No. 2, and "approved by the pope" will be read to the symposium. He said Benedict had also approved "significant" financial funding for the next three years for a center, to be based in Munich, Germany, the pope's former diocese, and dedicated to promoting practices to permit rapid intervention in cases of child abuse.

Scicluna, a top official in Cardinal Levada's congregation, pointed to Benedict's 2010 letter to Ireland apologizing for chronic child abuse within the Catholic Church. That letter failed to calm the anger of many victims, who accused the Vatican of ducking its own responsibility in promoting a worldwide culture of cover-up.

In that letter, Benedict "expressed his sorrow at the negligence in leadership," said Scicluna, a Maltese prelate who is a longtime Vatican official on doctrinal matters.

Countered Collins: "Being sorry is different than asking for forgiveness."

Scicluna added that: "I understand that by listening to Marie that we need individual leaders to admit when they have been negligent."

A Gregorian university official, vice-rector the Rev. Hans Zollner, said that on Tuesday evening, there will be a penitential vigil ceremony in a Rome church in which several participants will publicly ask forgiveness of abuse survivors. He said that the organizers hadn't decided yet which participants would be chosen for that role.

Vatican Cardinal Marc Ouellet, in charge of the office on bishops, will preside over that ceremony.

The Pope is just a big cover-up for the many, many little cover-ups!

With child molesters, past behavior is an accurate predictor of future behavior. They can't be rehabilitated. Yes there are a few who have pretended to be rehabilitated, but they were lying. Check the recidivism rates.

He is portraying the swaddled baby Jesus. If they had provided a video, it would have been followed by him throwing his blanket and skipping through the air with his arms outstretched to his sides like he's flying. And then it's Catholic tradition for the congregation to get on their knees and then wave their arms around in circles and chant hula hula bula hula waka waka maka hodie hodie hoe meka leka high watch Jesus fly. They have to say it in unison or Jesus can't hear him because the Pope is hearing impaired.

He is holding the holy stick thingy , and wrapped in the holy blankey , while he says some holy words no one but the clergy understand , I think the translation is this - I am a very very rich man , and as long as I can convince you I am the portal to God and everlasting life , I will continue to be very rich and powerful , as for this stick and blanket ????? I found 'em in the attic ...... Now bow to them because I have made them holy by my magic " ....... Okay folks , plain and simply , Jesus is the ONLY mediator between man and God , in fact Jesus IS God , so just kneel before Jesus , right there beside your bed , ask Him to save you and to lead you into Truth , and say bye-bye to these fraudulent "Holy Men" ...... " There is NONE Righteous , NO NOT ONE " ....... The Pope , and ALL OTHERS like him , need to fall on their faces and beg forgiveness from the Lord God Almighty , Jesus Christ , King of Kings and Lord of Lords , Creator and Ruler of the Universe .......

Ok time for an answer that isn't complete nonsense. He is holding the monstrance with the cloth of his garments because he is not worthy to hold the body of Christ. It is showing respect to God by doing this.

Count, you are SO right. Catholics absolutely LOVE wearing crosses. It's not about it being a reminder of Christ's ransom sacrifice, it's a reminder of how he was mercilessly & slowly & visciously tortured until he mercifully succumbed to Death. Each time they do it, they impale Christ afresh. Satan causes them to do that, and then he laughs.
      • d'Artagnon 3 mths ago
Catholics are rather stupid like that. The cross is nothing more than a MURDER weapon. And, Catholic fools worship it. However, in answer to Count Floyds thought that if Jesus had been killed 20 years ago, keep in mind that the Catholic Cult would be the one to kill him. Remember it was the major religion of the time in ancient Israel that killed him. So, the major religion of this time would also kill him.
        AKA the CATHOLIC CULT.

I don't see how an apology or request for forgiveness matters. Molesting children and sexual assault are felonies. Covering up felonies is a felony. These people should be in prison.

The pontiff makes no mistake hes dealing with this issue as the substitute for christ. He runs a world wide church. Don't blame him for the wicked hearts of some priests!!!!!!

Oh, Michael... please wake up... the Pope was in charge of the sex abuse arm of the Catholic Church for over 20 years!!! He was well aware of the problems and did his very best to just cover them up, transfer perverts to other parishes and double talk for the entire 20 years.
      • The Good News 3 mths ago
        Hello Michael
For one to conclude that a Pontiff makes no mistakes is blinding himself. Remember he is an imperfect man just like you and I. I can assure you that he does make mistakes. What should not be overshadowed is the reputation that the Catholic Church has had for many years. They have been responsible for many innocent lives. In March 21, 2000 Pope John Paul II visited Israel and apologized for the sins of Christians throughout history, including against Jews. Some people were disappointed the Pope did not specifically address the questions surrounding the behavior of Pope Pius XII during the Holocaust. We have to admit that this Pontiff made a huge mistake for not stepping in to prevent these horrific deaths. Michael, the problem with this world is the lack of sympathy we have for our neighbors. Imagine if it were your family; don’t know if you have kids, but if you do, imagine it were your kids or parents killed; worse than animals in the concentration camps or sexually abused by the priests that represent the Catholic Church; how would you feel? It’s true that the Pope cannot control the Priests' actions, but he can excommunicate them from the church, instead he relocated them to other churches where these sick people hunted for other innocent victims. If I were to write all of the disgusting things that the Catholic Church has done and continues to do it would surpass the amount of pages of the Bible. It is why you must not blind yourself my friend, and listen to the warnings in Revelation 18:4, 5 that says: “Get out of her (False religion), my people, if you do not want to share with her in her (False religion) sins, and if you do not want to receive part of her plagues. For her sins have massed together clear up to heaven, and God has called her acts of injustice to mind.” The Pope is the high priest of this religion and he is responsible for everything that occurs under his watch. Please read your Bible daily.

The pontificate claims to be God on earth. Jesus claimed to be the son of god. He was charged with blasphemy. Why would you belong to a church who's leader is a blasphemer?

I don’t understand how a person can support such organization(s) when all of their skeletons are coming out of the closet or should I say “closets.” It seems to me that those that support the Catholic Church have to work on “SYMPATHY.” It’s obvious that these supporters have never been victims or do not know of anyone that was a victim, like a son or daughter, someone dear to them. I mean, picture the moment in your mind when these victims were being maliciously raped. Can we honestly say that these victims were enjoying it? Something special that God gave us all is our virginities, a moment that you would want to give away; sometime in your adult life, with someone special. Now these victims have lost that privilege and will be emotionally scarred for the rest of their lives. In some cases, some of these victims become rapist themselves; a cycle that can’t be broken that began by members in the church. The apostil Paul said: “For if we practice sin willfully after having received the accurate knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins left” (Hebrews 10:26-31). In other words, the sacrifice of Christ; God’s gift to humankind, covers the sins we commit because of our imperfection. (1 John 2:1, 2) But those who practice sin without repentance show that they have no regard for this precious gift. In God’s eyes, they have “trampled upon the Son of God and . . . esteemed as of ordinary value the blood of” Jesus. (Verse 29) By their course, they show contempt for Jesus and treat his blood “as a cheap thing,” as having no more value than that of any imperfect human. Such ingrates are in no position to benefit from Christ’s sacrifice. By their continuous actions they have proven that they have not repented. For those that still support such evil organization remember this warning from Jehovah God: “Get out of her (False Religion), my people, if YOU do not want to share with her in her sins, and if YOU do not want to receive part of her plagues. For her (False Religion) sins have massed together clear up to heaven, and God has called her acts of injustice to mind” (Revelation 18:4, 5). I offer my sincere condolences to all the victims that have suffered such tragedy.

Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man…living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer and burn and scream until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you and he needs money.

Let's see.... oh ,yeah, the Pope already did ask for forgiveness for the abuses in June 2010... for those who forgot:
His exact words were "We too insistently beg forgiveness from God and from the persons involved, while promising to do everything possible to ensure that such abuse will never occur again."
He also said at that time, "in admitting men to priestly ministry and in their formation we will do everything we can to weigh the authenticity of their vocation and make every effort to accompany priests along their journey, so that the Lord will protect them and watch over them in troubled situations and amid life's dangers."
    • Joshua Ray  •  3 mths ago
I don't know that molestation is an error of the past that can be corrected. For the Pope to apologize to the victims and for the entire Church to issue an apology it might make a difference to some, and some is better than nothing. At least some people would be lifted by it.

The Catholic Church is a disgusting organization that thrives on poverty, and ignorance, the latter condition being sustained by a powerful church that dictates that the use of contraception will most assuredly result in the user spending eternity burning in Hell. this is the same organization that sanctioned the Auto de Fe, the gutters of Europe awash with with human fat. The Catholic Church is a festering pustule upon the face of decency, and its purveyors should be dispatched on sight !!

Completely useless. Just like royal ron, full of stinky hot air.

The pope has spoken out on many occasions and he has asked for forgiveness for the Church's failings. The past can not be undone. We can only correct the errors of the past and move on.
