It’s Official: Admiral Ackbar Will Be In Star Wars 7

It’s official - original ‘Star Wars’ actor Tim Rose will return as Admiral Ackbar in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’… but he’s not so fussed on all this secrecy.

During an interview with AAP Sydney (via Star Wars 7 News), original ‘Star Wars’ actor Tim Rose confirmed that he will appear in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. But it seems he isn’t exactly thrilled about keeping everything hush-hush.

“I’m very frustrated by [the secrecy on the film],” he said. “Out of the need to be secret, we’re not actually able to get everything we need to do our jobs as well as we could, and as someone who has been doing it for 35 years, I find it very frustrating.”

Of course, ‘Star Wars 7’ has been shrouded in secrecy since it was first announced… and numerous actors working on the film have hinted towards high levels of security, especially when it comes to their scripts.

“The secrecy has been ludicrous,” said C-3P0 actor Anthony Daniels. “For heaven’s sake, it’s a movie,” he added. “When I got the script, it was typed in black on paper of the deepest red so you couldn’t photocopy it. I got a hangover just reading it.”

That said, this is one of the most highly-anticipated films of the last decade… so perhaps the level of secrecy and security surrounding the production in understandable.

Either way, it isn’t a trap – Admiral Ackbar will be returning to the big screen.

And the man inside the costume is thrilled to be back… even if it’s not exactly ideal working conditions.

“It takes a unique sort of masochist to ever want to do it in the first place,” said Rose. “But the joy of doing it is the joy of animatronics, and that’s taking the foam latex, an inanimate object, and making people think it’s alive.”

Admiral Ackbar was last seen on the big screen in ‘Star Wars: Return of the Jedi’ but has also made an appearance in the animated series, ‘The Clone Wars’.

“I’d like to think I gave Ackbar something special which you can tell,” he said. “I think you can. I can tell when I see my friends who do specialised and full body suit work no matter what character they go into; I can tell you exactly who it is because I know their movements so well.”

How does Admiral Ackbar fit into ‘The Force Awakens’? Unfortunately, he couldn’t possibly spill the beans… but he does hint that there are plenty of other classic ‘Star Wars’ characters to be found in ‘Star Wars 7’.

“What I can say about the new movie is that if you were a fan of the original three, you’re going to absolutely love this one to bits,“ Rose said. “You can expect a smorgasbord of people you love.”

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 17 December 2015.
