Adobe Brings Photoshop Touch to the iPad

BARCELONA: Adobe Photoshop Express is a great, free and highly usable iOS app for quickly fixing up your digital photos, but it pales in comparison to the desktop version of Photoshop. Last year Adobe introduced a solution: Photoshop Touch, but chose to bring it to the Android Tablet market first. Now, as promised, Adobe is finally bringing that powerful image editing capability to Apple's iPad 2. The company will announce the new app today in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress.

Editor's note: This story was intended to be confidential until 9 p.m. Pacific Time on Sunday night, but 9 to 5 Mac broke that embargo, so that's why we're publishing this story early.

For $9.99, iPad 2 owners (sorry, there’s currently no iPad 1 support) get the ability to work in layers, use “sophisticated” selection tools and “scribble” over images to remove unwanted portions. Users will also be able to touch up photos, paint over them and create new layouts. The new app is part of Adobe’s upcoming suite of iPad “Touch” Apps. “Inspired by Adobe’s Creative Suite,” the apps include:

Adobe Collage; Adobe Debut presentation software; Adobe Ideas, which will be similar to the Illustrator vector-based desktop drawing software; Adobe Kuler color theme manager; and website- prototyping and wireframe tool Adobe Proto. Adobe said these remaining apps will launch for iOS later this year and will all work with Adobe’s Creative Cloud services.

Other features in Adobe Touch for iPad include the ability to share to Facebook directly from the app, search, using Google, from within the app, apply sophisticated image effects, and even use your tablet’s built-in camera to fill in portions of your image project.

“Photoshop Touch combines the magic of Photoshop and its core features with the convenience of a tablet, bringing image-editing power to the fingertips of millions of people,” said David Wadhwani, Adobe’s Digital Media Business Unit senior vice president and general manager.

Adobe’s Photoshop Touch requires iOS 5 and will be available in the App Store on Monday, February 27. Although 9 to 5 Mac reported it was available now in New Zealand and Australia, the app has since been removed from the App Store, set to become available worldwide on Monday. The 9 to 5 Mac site also reported some of its readers saying the iPad 2 version "works better than the Android version."

Will you pay nearly $10 for this tablet-based image editing app, or are instant effects-generators and editors like Instagram and Adobe Express sufficient for your image-editing needs? Let us know in the comments.

If this app is going to be $9.99, then why the heck is the a la carte version of Photoshop still $999???? I realize that it won't have nearly as many features as the desktop version, but there is no denying that Photoshop is overpriced.

"Will you pay nearly $10 for this tablet-based image editing app..." - $10!? The computer version is nearly $700, the "Elements version is $80...so yeah, people may end up paying "nearly" ten whole American dollars for it...

I have the real thing on my computer. Most definitely will not get this as I use a Wacom pad and pen to select.

Adobe Express really doesn't do it even after paying for add ons. This is what I have been looking for. I think they will be pleasantly surprised by the demand and wonder why they put there feelings about Apple in front of a good business decision. I will be downloading mine at the first opportunity.

Why would Adobe bring it to the android tablet first? Adobe products ALWAYS work better on Apple platforms. The one thing that kept Apple alive when no one could afford it was the design and print world. No professional is using PC based junk. If you could get it on an iPad, go buy a dam i pad.

"No professional is using PC based junk".

        Meanwhile in reality-land....

I only use Macs. Professional artists would not touch a PC. They suck just like I do to my men.

I am a design professional who works in a high-pressure deadline environment. Being forced to use the rigid file functions of a PC would make us miss every deadline out there. The way PCs use drive-mapping in a LAN is also a huge problem. All file links made by a PC are read by the Macs as being stored on the unit the link was made on, not the actual file location on the server. It means that opening an InDesign file originating on a PC will show all the links as missing, even though they are not. This is brain-dead, anti-productive and an obvious design flaw. It's not a problem if you only have PCs in your LAN, but like I said, the rigid file structure of the PC makes using them for design a time burner. I have a PC at home and love it, but then I am not under time pressure at home. I use what works best for the task at hand.

I don't think photoshop is suitable on the ipad. The fingertip precision is too hard to work with.

So why would adobe go for the android tablets first if iPads have the majority in tablet market?
      • LionBraweler 2 mths ago
It is because Apple hurts Adobe during the Flash vs HTML5 war.
      • Darren 2 mths ago
That or they wanted to work out the bugs with the Android version and avoid potentially #$%$ off the majority of the tablet market.

Because Android (or yet another Linux derivative) is the future. Used to laugh at the Linux crowd and their proclamations of "Open Source Will Prevail", but I'm no longer laughing.
