A beautiful photo of a grandfather and his adopted grandson has gone viral, because of the tear-jerking moment it captured.

The snapshot immortalised the moment that four-year-old Kirill met his grandad, Chris, for the first time – and discovered that he was also born without a right hand.

Chris’s son Doug Facey and his wife Lesley, from Newfoundland, adopted Kirill. It was love at first sight; they saw a pic of Kirill and immediately thought of Doug’s dad Chris.

“How could we say no to this little boy when I have grown up with someone who was the same all my life and it never bothered me or stopped him in one way or another,” Doug Facey told BuzzFeed Canada.

The Facey’s travelled to Kirill’s orphanage in Karaganda to meet their son last June, after deciding to adopt back in 2012.

“It was almost surreal, the meeting with him. It was something that seemed to be so far off in the distance for the longest time, then the next thing we knew were there,” said Doug. “The meeting day is a day that neither one of us would forget.”

Kirill’s uniqueness meant that he had been passed up for adoption numerous times before. “The mentality over there is he’s not perfect, and that’s a bunch of poppycock because anyone who speeds five seconds around Kirill knows that won’t stop him,” says Doug.

The dad even recalls a judge asking the couple if they wanted “to adopt a boy that’s missing a hand”, which angered Doug.

He told the judge: “With all due respect, this little guy, there’s nothing wrong with him. He’s missing a hand; I don’t consider him disabled.”

Finally, on September 13, the couple was able to bring Kirill home with them – and that’s when the tear-jerking photo was taken.

“My dad held out his stump and Kirill held out his and they bumped,” says Doug. “They have a very special bond; every time they see each other they do the stump bump, as well call it.”
