"Advanced Warfare" E3 Trailer Has Creepy Drones, Severed Arms

It wouldn't be E3 without a new slice of "Call of Duty" gameplay, and Microsoft decided to open its E3 2014 Xbox media briefing with an explosive clip of Activision's upcoming "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare." Expanding on the futuristic war tech themes of the game's Kevin Spacey-filled debut trailer, this latest "Induction" demo showcases a brutal firefight on the streets of Seoul, South Korea.

The mission starts players in a drop pod, which violently skids down a skyscraper in downtown Seoul before slamming you and your crew of U.S. Marines down to the ground. We get to see the game's Iron Man-esque hover boots in action, as the player character is able to slow his decent to the ground during a jump that would kill most soldiers.

Your journey eventually brings you to the heart of a war-ravaged Seoul, whose beautifully rendered buildings are burning up from the battle. With mechs walking the streets, robot-spiders crawling over debris and imposing warships looming above, "Call of Duty" has never looked more like a sci-fi movie. We were both impressed and creeped out by the enemy drones on display, which attack the player like a swarm of oversized mechanical bees.

The trailer shows off some cool gameplay concepts on top of the franchise's time-tested gun combat, such as the ability to change the utility of a single grenade. We can't wait to get our hands on the game's homing grenades, which float in the air for a moment before thrusting towards and obliterating their target. The clip also showcases a translucent combat shield, with a window that slides down for when you're ready to return fire to your enemy.

Keeping consistent with the franchise's flair for the dramatic, the clip ends with your character laying in a pile of debris after a failed attempt to rescue a teammate from an exploding ship. Upon being dragged to safety by your crew, your character's severed arm stays in place on the battlefield. Running on Xbox One, "Advanced Warfare" is looking like the first truly next-gen "Call of Duty." Character models were impressively realistic, to the point where we couldn't tell whether or not we were watching a pre-rendered cutscene. The charred remains of Korea's capital were brimming with detail, and the game looked to be running at a consistently smooth framerate.

We look forward to seeing more high-tech grenades, creepy drones and severed arms once "Advanced Warfare" launches on Nov. 4 for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC. As with previous installments, Microsoft's consoles will be the first to receive downloadable content.
